"Venus Mourning the Dead Adonis" mezzotint, second or third (final) state, undated (ca. 1665). "W. Vaillant fecit." at lower right. "E. Quellinus pinxit" at lower center. A stunning mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant after his mentor Erasmus Quellinus II depicting Adonis dying in the arms of Venus. Overwhelmed with sorrow, the goddess of love holds her lover, as her silky garments billow around them and the swans who drew her chariot cry in the background. Meanwhile, the wild boar who killed Adonis during a hunting accident lies in the foreground, and Cupid expresses his grief to the left. A beautiful, rare mezzotint mounted beneath glass in a custom frame. Size (sight view): 14.5" L x 11.5" W (36.8 cm x 29.2 cm) Size (frame): 20.625" L x 17.625" W (52.4 cm x 44.8 cm) Venus had had a dream that Adonis would be the victim of a hunting accident. While out hunting, Adonis's dogs had excited a wild boar who ended his life. Wallerant Vaillant studied with Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp. In addition, Prince Rupert of the Rhine was his tutor in etching techniques. In 1664, Vaillant settled in Amsterdam following a five year stay in Paris with Philibert de Gramant and became the court painter of John William Friso, Prince of Orange. WALLERANT VAILLANT Young Artist with a Statue of Cupid. Mezzotint, circa 1665. 277x213 mm; 10 7/8x8 3/8 inches, small margins. A very good impression of this scarce, early mezzotint. Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter-printmaker. Born in Lille, he came from a family of artists, he studied in Antwerp and Amsterdam and stayed in Paris for several years during the mid-1650s. In 1658, he traveled with his brother to Frankfurt and Heidelberg, where he helped master the mezzotint technique of engraving with Prince Ruprecht of the Rhine while he was his artistic tutor. Prince Ruprecht (1619-1682) and Vaillant are credited with improving the nascent process of mezzotint engraving that had been developed by Ludwig von Siegen around 1654. This labor-intensive process, in which a prepared plate was burnished in order to bring out the subject (working from dark to light), was created and used, for much of the following century that it remained popular, to reproduce paintings--namely subjects by masters like Caravaggio, Ribera and others imbued with heavy chiaroscuro. Prince Ruprecht was also a nephew of Charles I (reigned 1625-1649), and commanded the royalist forces during the English Civil War (1642-1648). He demonstrated the new technique of mezzotint to the Royal Society in London in 1661.

Jhs.; Junger Jagdgehilfe mit Fellmütze, Gewehr, Erpel und Hase als Jagdbeute Das Brustbild zeigt einen nach links gewandten Knaben mit rotbraunen Haaren, der den erlegten Hasen über den Lauf des geschulterten Gewehrs gebunden hat, während er die Stockente mit der linken Hand am Hals ergriffen hat. Das Barock-Bild erhält seinen spezifischen Reiz durch die feinfühlig charakterisierende Darstellung des Knaben, der dem Betrachter mit wachem Blick entgegenschaut. Es basiert auf einem wohl verlorenen Gemälde, das Vaillant selbst auch in einem seitenverkehrten Mezzotinto-Stich wiedergegeben hat. Im Unterschied zum Vaillant-Vorbild komponierte der Künstler die Figur vor einen Landschaftshintergrund und wählte ein Gewehr statt eines Stockes. He appears as an ‘Oriental’ wearing an elaborate turban (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin), a Dutch burgher (Historisches Museum, Frankfurt), a soldier or standard bearer (Niederländische Landesgalerie, Hanover), and in the grand pose of Rembrandt’s famous self portrait of 1642 (Gemäldegalerie, Dresden) Vaillant painted numerous versions and copies of his self portraits and at least two other examples of Self Portrait with a Polish Hat are known, one in an English private collection and another in a private collection in The Hauge. Born in Lille, Vaillant worked in Amsterdam, Middelburg, Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Paris. Many of his self portraits are still in Germany today. Bekröntes Lilienwappen.Nach einem Gemälde des Künstlers im Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (Inv. Nr. SK-A-1192). Prachtvoller, samtiger Druck mit breitem Rand. Geglättete Vertikalfalte, entlang dieser im unteren Rand kleiner Einriss, links oben Randeinriss bis knapp an die Plattenkante, vor allem im weißen Rand etwas stockfleckig, im weißen Rand weiterhin Knitterspuren und Bleistiftannotationen und kleine Federannotation rechts, an der linken oberen Ecke leichter Randschaden, sonst vor allem in der Darstellung noch sehr gut erhalten. Bildnis des Fechtmeisters Johann Georg Bruck. Radierung und Kupferstich. 11,2 x 8,2 cm. 1671. Hollstein 2. Wallerant Vaillant ist vor allem durch sein umfangreiches Œuvre an Schabkunstblättern bekannt. Er schuf jedoch auch eine kleine Zahl von Porträtradierungen. Das vorliegende Bildnis mit dem Vierzeiler in Buchdruck ist sehr selten. Hollstein erwähnt zwei weitere Exemplare in Amsterdam und Lille. Ausgezeichneter Druck mit Rand. Etwas gebräunt, minimale Erhaltungsmängel, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar.
