      JOSEF VAIC* (Domousice 1884–1961 Pragueue) St. Stephen's Cathedral, 1906 watercolor and pencil/cardboard, 49 x 34,5 cm signed Vaic, dated 06 ESTIMATE °€ 1000 - 2000 STARTING PRICE °€ 1000 Vaic studied in Amsterdam and The Hague, allegedly with a "Professor Neuhaus", and in The Hague and Paris with "Israels", possibly Jozef Israëls. In 1907, Vaic had a collective exhibition with Vojtȇch Preissig at the Miethke Gallery in Vienna. At the beginning of his career, Vaic devoted himself primarily to painting and drawing; later he devoted himself almost exclusively to etching. From Vaic’s hand, mainly views and urban scenes from Prague have been handed down. St. Stephen's Cathedral (actually the Cathedral and Metropolitan Church of St. Stephen and All Saints) on Vienna's Stephansplatz has been the seat of a cathedral chapter since 1365, cathedral since 1469/1479 and metropolitan church of the Archbishop of Vienna since 1723. The "Steffl" is considered a symbol of Vienna and a national shrine of Austria and is dedicated to St. Stephen. The second patron saint is All Saints' Day. Pulpit by Anton Pilgram.
