      Est: $3,000 - $3,500

BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993) Palatine Hills, 1955 Watercolor on paper 18 x 26 inches (45.7 x 66.0 cm) (image) Signed and dated lower right: PROVENANCE: Valley House Gallery Inc., Dallas (label verso). Bror Utter was one of the leaders of the artist group known as the Fort Worth Circle. He painted Palatine Hills in 1955. It was probably composed from the sketches he made while visiting Rome two years before. This watercolor depicts the Imperial building complex which was the centermost of the Seven Hills of Rome upon which the city was built. The historic Roman subject was the perfect vehicle for Utter's favorite styles and themes. Utter was always fascinated with Roman arches, niches and compartments. He also uses a distorted grid structure to create mismatching planes throughout the composition. This kind of abstraction is almost always present in his skies. The painting's precariously harmonized and eccentric colors are hallmarks of his sophisticated style. All of these elements combine in Palatine Hills to create the surreal quality, brooding mood, and sense of timelessness that characterize his work.

Landscape with Houses is painted in a regionalist style which characterizes much of Bror Utter's work from the late 1930s and early 1940s. His distinctive use of color is already in evidence; the tones of green, yellow and orange contribute to the surrealistic mood of the painting.

BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993) Pitcher, Two

      Est: $2,500 - $3,500

BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993) Pitcher, Two Fish, and a Lobster, circa 1950 Oil on canvas 14 x 10 inches (35.6 x 25.4 cm) Signed lower left: Bror Utter From the Estate of Kelly Fearing. Vessels of many varieties formed an important component of Bror Utter's visual iconography. His compositions often incorporated urns, urns with lids, urns with and without handles, chalices, pitchers, libation cups, bowls, bowls with legs, vases, or conch shells, each of these forms seemingly plucked from some treasure chest of antiquity. In Utter's hands, the particular posture of a vessel could slyly suggest human attributes. Slim-waisted containers with wide mouths and bases appeared to lean and tilt with undeniable feminine energy. What all of these vessels were designed to contain was secondary to their beautiful lines and elegant forms. Indeed, Utter was transfixed throughout his life by the form and shape of things. Pitcher of Fishes combines Bror Utter's love of forms with his equally strong affinity for color. If painted in black and white this image would still intrigue, but when seen through a prism of Aegean-like blues, the pitcher becomes an unlikely yet effective crucible of life. Bror Utter's color sense was a constant source of wonder to his Fort Worth contemporaries and continues today as a main source of Utter's appeal.

BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993) Presence, October 1957 Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches (61.0 x 76.2 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Bror Utter 10/57 Inscribed on stretcher: Presence Bror Utter was a leading member of a group of modernists called the Fort Worth Circle, who dominated the avant-garde art scene in the 1930s and 1940s and remained popular throughout his career. According to one newspaper clipping, "two things chiefly distinguish Utter's work. One is his sophisticated way with color and texture. The other is his ability to discover extraordinary things in ordinary forms and express his discoveries with grace and wit." This offering of works by Utter in this sale shows the range of his endeavors from the early 1940s the mid-1960s. Despite the differences between these paintings, they are still distinctly recognizable as his work. Utter was born in Fort Worth and studied under Sallie Gillespie as a teenager. While working in his father's lithograph plant in the 1930s, he studied under Wade Jolly at the Fort Worth School of Fine Arts. In 1940, he attended the Colorado Fine Arts Center. Utter taught at numerous Fort Worth institutions, including the Fort Worth Art Center and Texas Wesleyan College, while also working as a full-time painter. Bror Utter's paintings have been extensively exhibited in the United States at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Art and is represented in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art; the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; and the Denver Art Museum. Presence is from a series of paintings Utter created in the early 1950s. As trends in modern art became more nonfigurative, he remained primarily a figure painter by developing what he called embellished forms. Thus his abstract forms retained their figural spirit. Presence depicts four birdlike creatures that first appear in a painting titled Encounter, which can be found in the catalogue for Utter's 1953 solo exhibition at the Fort Worth Public Library. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art has a similar painting from the series called Metamorphosis III (Assembly of Birds), 1953. It is remarkably similar to Presence and, while the colors may be different, both of the paintings display the precariously harmonized and eccentric tones that characterize his sophisticated style.

Though he took on many subjects, Utter was primarily a figure painter. In this work, both his figures and their dream-like setting have become more abstract. They signal to each other as if communicating the mystical secrets of the universe.

BROR ALEXANDER UTTER (American, 1913-1993) The Visitors, 1943 Oil on canvas board 24 x 17-3/4 inches (61.0 x 45.1 cm) Signed along table edge: "Bror Utter' PROVENANCE: Mr. Charles H. Debuis, Fort Worth (label verso). EXHIBITED: Dallas Museum of Art, "Fifth Texas General Exhibit," 1943-44 (label verso). The Visitors was painted in 1943 by Bror Utter. It is a stunning example of his early work and has many elements to which he will return over the course of his career. He continued to paint vessels and seashells, even as his work became more abstract in later years. Women in hats, especially groups of three women, are also a subject that he will resume repeatedly and are heavily influenced by the work of Henri Matisse. However, unlike Matisse, Utter's beautiful but muted palette invokes a surrealistic, dreamlike mood. His early works of this quality seldom come on the open market, making this painting a rare opportunity for any collector of early Texas art. Utter was a leading member of the Fort Worth Circle, a group of artists that also included Bill Bomar, Veronica Helfensteller, and Dickson Reeder. In the 1930s and 1940s, these friends and collaborators helped each other to develop their work in styles that included the influence of art movements such as Surrealism, Modernism, and Regionalism. Born in 1913, Utter was a Fort Worth native. He studied with Sallie Gillespie and attended the Fort Worth School of Fine Arts while he worked in the lithograph store that his family owned. Later, he went to the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center on a scholarship. After returning to Fort Worth, he taught until 1951, when he was able to become a full-time artist.

BROR UTTER (American, 1913-1993) Palatine Hill III, 1957 Oil on linen 28 x 36 inches (71.1 x 91.4 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Bror Utter 2/'57 EXHIBITED: Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, 1957; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, 1958; Fort Worth Art Center, Fort Worth, "Bror Utter Retrospective Exhibition", 1961. LITERATURE: S. Canty, A Retrospective Exhibition of the Work of Bror Utter Under the Auspices of the Forth Worth Art Association, Texas, 1961, no. 73. Bror Utter was one of the leaders of the artist group known as the Fort Worth Circle. He painted Palatine Hill III in 1957. It was probably composed from sketches in his notebook, often watercolored and beautiful works of art in their own right, made when he had traveled to Rome four years before. In 1961, this painting was part of the Retrospective Exhibition of the Work of Bror Utter Under the Auspices of the Fort Worth Art Association, curated by the legendary art patron Sam Cantey III. It was reproduced in the catalogue for which Cantey also wrote the introduction. This excellent painting depicts the Imperial building complex which was the centermost of the Seven Hills of Rome upon which the city was built. The historic Roman subject was the perfect vehicle for Utter's favorite styles and themes. The remaining ruins rise out of the rocky hill. They are a skeleton of massive, crumbing columns and empty arches. All of these elements combine in Palatine Hill III to create the surreal quality, brooding mood, and sense of timelessness that characterize his work.
