Antoni Utrillo captures in this drawing a dynamic and elegant scene of a dance, focusing the attention on a couple moving gracefully in the center of the composition. The technique combines the expressive power of charcoal, which defines the contours and gives depth to the figures, with the softness and color nuances of pastel, which bring life and texture to the drawing. She is the main protagonist. She wears a long dress, which opens forming soft shells at the bottom, suggesting the cadence and rhythm of the dance. The scene presents an elegantly dressed lady, seated with haughty demeanor in a simple chair that does not distract from the prominence of her figure. Her impeccably cut silk dress, with a high collar, reflects the refined fashion of the period and suggests a firm, upper-class personality. The satin greens of the dress contrast with the pearly tone of her face and the burgundy background. On her face there is no sign of obvious emotion after reading the letter: neither the glow of joy nor the shadow of disappointment, just an expressionless calm that intrigues the viewer. The eyes are huge and deep-set, almost black, standing out greatly in her pearly face. With one hand resting on her forehead, she seems immersed in a reflective pause after reading the letter she still holds in her other hand. A painter trained at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona, with Antonio Caba, and a boarder in Paris, where he worked in the workshops of Coutois and Colin, Antoni Utrillo became known in various exhibitions in Barcelona. This magnificent painting, resolved with a language close to the modernism, three nymphs of ethereal aspect give dance steps without hardly touching the ground, to the rhythm of the music played by small putti or angels. The landscape format and its large dimensions allow Utrillo to welcome the figures in an enveloping space, a sensual and exuberant nature, in keeping with the young women. The whole is resolved with sharp shades of color. The boldness of the author's draftsmanship stands out, as well as the subtle chromatic transitions he achieves to modulate the atmospheric light. In this painting, of large dimensions and with an unusually landscape format to accommodate several scenes that take place in the same space, Antoni Utrillo immerses us in an aristocratic atmosphere, resolved with sharply defined shades. A pianist occupies the center of the palatial room, a servant enters the scene with a tray full of champagne glasses, two young ladies whisper to each other and, in turn, are watched and admired by two men in elegant suits. Finally, an older woman, oblivious to all this, sleeps peacefully in her armchair. The boldness of the author's drawings stands out, as well as the subtle chromatic transitions he achieves to modulate the atmospheric light.
