Utech Katalog der Skulpturen P08 Provenance Galerie Ferdinand Möller, Berlin; Nationalgalerie Berlin (1934 acquired by director Prof. Eberhard Hanfstaengl); in 1936 the sculpture passed back into the possession of the artist; instead, he gave the granite sculpture "Alter Hirte" from 1935 to the Nationalgalerie; since then in the estate of the artist Exhibition Berlin 1934 (Galerie Ferdinand Möller); Kolberg 1939 (Städtisches Museum), Joachim Utech. Arbeiten in Stein, Kinderköpfe no. 3, n. illus.; Nuremberg 1959 (Germanisches Nationalmuseum), Joachim Utech. Steinbildwerke und Fotografien von Plastiken, no. 2, n. illus. The German sculptor Joachim Utech produced numerous works in wood and stone. He had a particular preference for granite, even though it is a particularly brittle and hard material. Heads form a substantial part of his sculptural oeuvre, and we currently know of no less than nine children's heads. In 1945, fleeing Eastern Pomerania, Utech was forced to leave behind his entire early work - approximately 250 sculptures - in his native Bialogard (Belgard). Thanks to the artist's carefully kept "catalogue of sculptures", a handwritten record with titles, short descriptions and pencil sketches in chronological order, we know many of those works. In 1957 the Polish state returned just under 70 of the sculptures abandoned in 1945. While the skin of this child's head is only very lightly ground, Utech left the hair quite rough, with chisel marks staying visible. The different surface textures create a sense of the face emerging from the stone. In the early 1930s, the head had been shown at the Ferdinand Möller Gallery in Berlin, after Utech had been connected with the gallery by the influential art critic Julius Meier-Graefe. (Cf.
