Utamaro (1753) Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Wood cutter, b. 1753 - d. 1806

Artist Kitagawa Utamaro was one of the most famous ukiyo-e artists. Ukiyo-e translates to "pictures of the floating world," and artist Utamro's ukiyo-e prints were unique in that they usually portrayed one woman, versus the multiple women in comparable ukiyo-e art. Utamaro's art is most well known for his erotic depictions of women, as most of his over 1,500 prints feature females, from mothers to courtesans.

Before ukiyo-e art, Utamaro created illustrated books, the most famous being Insects. One of his most famous set of ukiyo-e woodcut prints is titled Fu ninsogaku jittai (Ten Physiognomies of Women). Utamaro's woodblock prints of the wife and concubines of military dictator Toyotomi Hideyoshi's got him arrested for shaming the dictator. This ended Kitagawa Utamaro's work as an artist, and he died two years later in 1806. Even though his career was cut short, there are many of Utamaro's ukiyo-e prints for sale around the world. Antique Japanese woodblock print by Kitigawa Utamaro (1753-1806) titled Woman Playing with Goldfish. This piece is after the original which was created in the late 1700s, and it is part of the series Ten Classics of Women’s Physiognomy. This piece is part of the famous Robert O. Muller collection, and it was purchased by Muller in the 1930s. This print was produced by Hashiguchi Goyo. Hashiguchi Goyo is one of the most famous and admired artists of 20th century Japanese woodblocks. Often called the "Taisho Utamaro," Goyo published this masterful set of reprints as an homage to his Edo era predecessor. Released in 1920, shortly before Goyo's death, these are indisputably the finest Utamaro reprints ever produced. Sparing no expense in production, these prints feature finely embossed details and shimmering mica accents that truly distinguish them from lesser reproductions. These prints are considered some of the rarest and most valuable reprints on the market. As the production numbers for this series was quite low, they are almost impossible to find on the market today. This is an excellent opportunity for serious collectors as we are unlikely to come across another group of these oban Goyo reprints in such fine condition. Each print has the red rectangular Goyo seal in the margin or on the reverse. This piece is double matted and framed under glass, in an ornate golden frame. With frame, this measures 17.5 inches x 21.5 inches. This piece comes with a detailed Certificate of Provenance and Authority (see picture).

KITAGAWA UTAMARO (JAPANESE 1753 - 1806) PRINT FROM SIX HOUSES OF THE YOSHIWARA, KANSEI PERIOD, WOODBLOCK PRINT

    Est: $200 - $500

Frame height 21 in., width 16.25; sight, height 15 in., 12.25. Hanaogi of the Ogiya from series Renowned Beatuie likened to the Six Immortal Poets (Komei bijin rokkagen) Woodblock print on gompi washi paper. Utamaro was a Japanese printmaker and painter who was one of the greatest artists of the ukiyo-e movement; he is known especially for his masterfully composed portraits of sensuous female beauties. In about 1791 Utamaro concentrated on making half-length single portraits of women rather than prints of women in groups as favoured by other ukiyo-e artists. In 1804, at the height of his success, he made some prints depicting the military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s wife and concubines. Consequently, he was accused of insulting Hideyoshis dignity and was ordered to be handcuffed for 50 days. The experience crushed him emotionally and ended his career as an artist. Among his best known works are the wood-block-print series (Ten Physiognomies of Women), (Twelve Hours at the Gay Quarters), (The Seven Beauties of the Gay Quarters), and Kasen koi no fu (Women in Love). Condition: Good, there are no fold marks. Discoloring and darkening apparent on paper.
