Juan Uslé. Open Rooms, Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid 2004 - From the special 1990s phase of the New York paintings - Part of the first international retrospective and other important exhibitions - Magnificent rhythmic composition of radiant colour The Spanish artist Juan Uslé is internationally renowned for his lively paintings that captivate the viewer with enchanting pictorial rhythms. They play with the repetition of patterns while practising a certain uniqueness. These patterns, inspired by memories lived and dreamed, recall the vibrations and movements of bustling New York City, where he lives for part of the year and where the work offered here was created. In the early 1990s, having just arrived in New York, Uslé developed his very personal language of simultaneous styles. As in the work offered here, "Mecanismo Gramatical", from this point on his works are characterised by their uniquely intense colours and by the alternation of dynamism and immobility, gesture and geometry, and sobriety and emotionality. These characteristics appear alone or together with their opposite in all possible proportions in the composition. Conceptual-looking multiple spaces and abstract landscapes emerge, based on his lived reality of memories, emotions, coincidences and dreams. They reflect a flowing of time and show sequences of nature or city life - thus serving as a transcription of real time. Through the playful and undogmatic approach to painting, the viewer is also given a new understanding of pictorial surface or pictorial space. One encounters lyrical abstraction, amorphous structures but also figurative associations in an oscillation of pictorial depth and flatness. The artist also uses light to evoke emotions instead of an understanding of volume. The work presented here is a prime example of this extremely exciting phase of his work and was chosen by the artist for his first important retrospective touring exhibition. Juan Uslé is one of the most important contemporary Spanish painters and was a participant in documenta IX in 1992 and in the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. Signed, dated and located (New York) on the back. Measurements: 56 x 41 cm. Provenance: -Soledad Lorenzo Gallery, Madrid (label on the back). -Private collection. -Private collection, Madrid, 2021. In this work Uslé proposes to the spectator a contrast between opposites that he exercises both through the forms and the chromatic tonalities. To this end, he constructs a composition in which superimposed languages come together. The vertical lines are composed of other diagonal lines, which harmonise with each other, giving greater dynamism to the verticality of the work. This work belongs to a mature period of his American period, in which his colours are transformed and his pictorial technique becomes more varied. He paints lines, floating forms, intense colours, undulating backgrounds and multicoloured stripes. It is inevitable to situate Uslé in a context, both Spanish and international, where his work takes shape. It is essential to take into account the influence of Mondrian's neoplasticism, Reinhardt's black colour, the strength of the brushstroke of the late Kooning, Newman's zips and Picabia's machine paintings. According to the artist himself, disorder in space is essential in his work. Also important are the visual calm he learned from Fellini's film "8 ½", and the fantastic imaginary of the Jules Verne novels he read in his youth. In fact, Uslé conceives his painting as a journey without a destination, the goal of which is at the disposal of the painting itself, endowing the work with a complete autonomy indissolubly linked to abstraction. An artist based between New York and Saro (Cantabria), he has collaborated with the Soledad Lorenzo gallery in Madrid since 1993. Juan Uslé studied Fine Arts at the Escuela Superior de San Carlos (Valencia, 1973-77), later extending his studies with the Scholarship for Young Artists (1980) and the Scholarship for Research into New Expressive Forms (1982), both from the Ministry of Culture. In 1984 he took part for the first time in the Arco fair, and two years later he moved to New York with his partner, the artist Victoria Civera. In 1992 he took part in the Documenta in Kassel, and in 1996 the IVAM dedicated his first retrospective exhibition to him, a recognition which was followed in 2002 by the National Prize for Plastic Arts. Throughout his career, Uslé has held exhibitions in leading museums and galleries such as the MACBA, the Saatchi in London, the Serralves Museum, the Es Baluard in Palma, the Ludwig Museum in Vienna and the New MoMA in New York, although his anthological exhibition "Open Rooms", presented in 2003 at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid, the Marcelino Botín Foundation in Santander, the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, is particularly noteworthy for its importance. Juan Uslé is currently represented in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Es Baluard in Palma, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Saatchi Collection, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris, the Marugame Hirai Museum in Japan and the Tate Modern in London, among other collections.

JUAN USLÉ (Santander, 1954). "They're coming", 2005. Mixed technique on canvas and board. Work reproduced in Switch on / switch off CAC Málaga (2007-08) pp. 89-90. Presents the Frith Street Gallery label (London). Signed, dated and titled. Measures: 46 x 61 cm; 70 x 86 cm (frame). In this work Uslé proposes to the spectator a contrast between opposites that he exercises both through forms and chromatic tonalities. To this end, he builds a composition where superimposed languages come together. The vertical lines are composed of other horizontal lines, which sometimes present rectangular interjections of black, which fragment the established rhythm. This work belongs to a mature period of his American stage, in which his colors are transformed and his pictorial technique becomes more varied. He paints lines, floating forms, intense colors, wavy backgrounds and multicolored stripes. He builds complex baroque designs and grids painted with different colors under swirling lines. Uslé's refusal to define himself, in short, to pigeonhole himself, is particularly important at this time. Nevertheless, it is inevitable to place him in a context, both Spanish and international, where his work takes shape. It is indispensable to see that he takes the grids of Mondrian's neoplasticism, Reinhardt's black color, the strength of the brushstroke of the late Kooning, Newman's zips or Picabia's machinist paintings; according to the artist himself, disorder in space is something essential in his work. Also important are the visual calm he learned from the film "8 ½" by Fellini, and the fantastic imaginary of the Jules Verne novels he read in his youth. In fact, Uslé conceives his painting as a journey without a destination, whose goal is at the disposal of the painting itself, endowing the work with a complete autonomy indissolubly linked to abstraction. An artist based in New York and Saro (Cantabria), he has collaborated with the Soledad Lorenzo gallery in Madrid since 1993. Juan Uslé studied Fine Arts at the Escuela Superior de San Carlos (Valencia, 1973-77), later extending his studies with the Scholarship for Young Artists (1980) and the one dedicated to the Research of New Expressive Forms (1982), both from the Ministry of Culture. In 1984 he participated for the first time in the Arco fair, and two years later he moved to New York with his partner, the artist Victoria Civera. In 1992 he took part in the Documenta in Kassel, and in 1996 the IVAM dedicated his first retrospective exhibition to him, a recognition that was followed in 2002 by the National Prize for Plastic Arts. Throughout his career, Uslé has held exhibitions in prominent museums and galleries such as the MACBA, the Saatchi in London, the Serralves Museum, the Es Baluard in Palma, the Ludwig in Vienna or the New MoMA in New York, although it is worth mentioning for its importance his anthology "Open Rooms", presented in 2003 at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid, the Marcelino Botín Foundation in Santander, the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

Untitled, 1986. Mixed technique on cardboard glued to wood. It has a label on the back of CAC MÁLAGA (Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga). Presents professional framing. Measurements: 78.5 x 108.5 cm; 83 x 113.5 cm (frame). This work is constituted as a landscape that oscillates between abstraction and figuration. For this, the artist has started from the pictorial tradition of representing a marina, to which he has incorporated new technical elements, such as the wooden strip or the support on which the pictorial material is placed. Thus deconfiguring the idea of landscape and presenting it to the viewer in a totally subjective way, as in other works by the artist, such as the series of the Cubas River, also made in 1986. In this sense it is interesting to rescue the words of the author; "My relationship with the landscape is purely experiential, a very felt and very lived relationship, because for me the landscape is not just a concept, an idea, or a territory, but has a human component of friction, experience and feeling".according to the artist himself, the disorder in space is something essential in his work. Also important are the visual calm he learned from the film "8 ½" by Fellini, and the fantastic imaginary of the Jules Verne novels he read in his youth.
