        JOSÉ MARÍA URÍA Y URÍA (Oviedo 1861 - Vigo 1937) Untitled. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 65 x 65 cm. Portrait that stands out for the psychological depth of the protagonist. On a background almost in semi-darkness, and a dress of black tones, the rotundity and sobriety dominates this work. Except for the orange horizon, which brings light and warmth. It is very likely that the work is from the period in which he worked in Oviedo, as the character presents a similar attire to that used in the area of Asturias, such as the beret. A feature that inscribes this work within the current of nationalism, or regionalism, very popular during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, whose aim was to show the popular types, from a friendly and naive perspective, which extolled the peculiarities and cultures of these regions. José María began his academic training under the guidance of the artist, Antonio Fernández Cuevas. Some time later, he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts of San Fernandez, and at the same time he trained in the Salvador Martinez Cubells studio, in addition to working as a copyist for the Prado Museum. In 1882 he traveled to Rome, where he stayed for three years. At the end of his stay he decided to move to Oviedo where he worked as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts. In 1881, he presented at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, his historical work Prince Don Carlos and the Duke of Alba, which earned him great critical acclaim. Three years later he received the third medal, and in 1894 the second with works that today can be visited at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
