(Innsbruck 1838–1902 Neuilly-sur-Seine) Amalfi, signed, dated F. R. Unterberger 1888, verso titled “Amalfi, F. R. Unterberger Bruxelles”, oil on canvas, 132 x 111 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. Exhibited: Münchner Jubiläumsausstellung, 1888, Cat.No. 2332. A certificate issued by Dr. Sybille Moser-Ernst, Vienna, 30 July 2024, available upon request. We are grateful to Dr. Sybille Moser-Ernst for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. Extract from the certificate issued by Dr Sybille Moser-Ernst: In 1864 Unterberger moved from Düsseldorf to Brussels, which he chose as his permanent residence until his death, which apparently gave rise to the erroneous opinion that he had even taken Belgian citizenship and was now to be described as a ‘naturalised Belgian’, having moved to Brussels from Schaerbeek, a suburb of Brussels, in 1868. Towards the end of the 1870s, he created a view of Amalfi in glorious sunshine - as a kind of counterpart to his views of Norway, which focused on the light and atmosphere of the north. This Amalfi painting, which has equally become a hallmark of Unterberger’s work, was repeated by the artist himself in several replicas. Sometimes he changed the staffage. Most of the time, we see a salon bourgeoisie enjoying the carefree Italian folk life in the foreground, in a back or side view, a marvelous coastal landscape in the afternoon sun.

(Innsbruck 1838–1902 Neuilly-sur-Seine) Near Naples, signed F. R. Unterberger, oil on canvas, 66.5 x 94 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. Catalogued in: Sybille-Karin Moser, F. R. Unterberger und die salonfähige Landschaftsmalerei im 19. Jahrhundert, Innsbruck/Vienna 1986, p. 171, no. 37, Capri. We are grateful to Dr. Sybille-Karin Moser-Ernst for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. A certificate issued by Dr. Sybille-Karin Moser-Ernst, 10. September 2023, is available upon request. Franz Richard Unterberger was born in Innsbruck and was influenced by his father’s work in the art trade at an early age. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and received lessons from the landscape painter Julius Lange. Unterberger followed Lange when he was appointed to teach Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium, later Empress of Mexico, in Milan. He had to leave Milan after a few months due to the outbreak of the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859. He returned to Munich, before extending his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy. Oswald Achenbach, one of the most important German landscape painters of the 19th century, became his private teacher. Many of Unterberger’s works were created during a study trip that took him to Norway in 1860. After graduating from the academy in 1864, he moved to Brussels. Further trips took him to southern France and Italy. Motifs from Naples in particular were then presented at the Vienna Kunstverein and at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873. The present lot impressively demonstrates the artist’s ability to focus both on the detailed depiction of people in a fishing village and on the impressive rocky coast in the background. Franz Richard Unterberger’s paintings were so popular at the time of their creation that they were often sold at exhibition. Among the buyers were members of the imperial family, such as Archduke Karl Ludwig. The painter died in 1902 in Neuilly, a suburb of Paris, where he often spent the summer months and maintained a studio.

    • Franz Richard Unterberger,
      Jul. 19, 2022

      Franz Richard Unterberger,

      Est: £20,000 - £30,000

Franz Richard Unterberger, Austrian 1837-1902- Sunset at the Santa Maria della Salute, Venice; oil on panel, signed 'F R Unterberger' (lower right), further signed, titled and inscribed 'St Maria della Salute a Venise / FR. Unterberger. Bruxelles' on the reverse, bears old label with number '165' on the reverse, 35.6 x 65 cm. Provenance: With Richard Green, London, no.AD109.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 10 October 1986, lot 24.; An important Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work was painted in the last decade of Unterberger’s life, after 1888, when he was prone to revisiting his most successful subjects from the late 1870s and treating them again with higher levels of virtuosity. The subject clearly found favour with the artist as he captured it in a number of versions which are known today. See, for example, two larger variations of the present work, though on canvas, which were offered at Christie’s, London, 20 June 2002, lot 82 and Sotheby’s, New York, 1 February 2019, lot 545. Dominated by the basilica Santa Maria Della Salute in the background, the present work evokes the serenity of a sunset evening in Venice, with the gondolas gliding on the Grand Canal and elegantly dressed Venetians promenading in the foreground. Unterberger adopts a soft palette, to great effect, of romantic earthy hues with some sparsely adopted touches of red to enliven the scene. The broad, panoramic scene is layered with levels of detail, and in the distance, the two domes and bell towers of the Salute obscure the brightness of the setting sun, bathing the canal in an afternoon glow. Whilst Unterberger’s keen eye for architectural elements is reminiscent of Italian vedutismo, this animated scene rendered with quick gestural brushstrokes is typical of the artist’s more romantic approach to the genre. The painting is particularly rare and special for being on panel and, as with his few other works on panel, was presumably taken ‘in situ’. Indeed, a sense of immediacy is very much present. We are grateful to Professor Sybille Moser-Ernst for confirming the authenticity of this lot, which is accompanied by her letter, and for dating it to the last decade of the artist’s life.
