Oil on canvas Germany, 1936 Hugo Ungewitter (1869 - c. 1944) - German animal and battle painter Signed and dated lower left, 'UNGEWITTER 1936' Dimensions: 100 x 150 cm Partly gilt wooden frame: 115 x 162 cm A typical realistic and large-scale horsemen depiction by Hugo Ungewitter. Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. In 1924, Hugo Ungewitter made a study trip to Abyssinia. He published his travel sketches in 1926 in the monthly magazines of the publishing house Velhagen & Klasing under the title 'A painter in Abyssinia.' Ungewitter made the present painting ten years later, most likely based on his sketches. The horsemen depictions are reminiscent of his contemporary Franz Roubaud (1856-1928), who studied in Munich and made him a name for his battle scenes and paintings from the Caucasus. Condition: The color surface shows minor craquelure consistent with age. The inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching to the background (with some corresponding patches on the reverse) and along the margins. A tear affecting the lower right part had been carefully repaired. Otherwise good overall impression with fresh looking colors. The ornate frame is minimally worn. The dimensions of the canvas are 100 x 150 cm, and the frame measures 115 x 162 cm. Hugo Ungewitter (1869-c. 1944) From 1887, Hugo Ungewitter visited the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. He received commissions from the afore-mentioned Academy and the Court of Berlin. From 1906, he lived in Berlin and painted mainly battle scenes. In 1913, he was appointed professor at the Court of Berlin. His favorite subjects were nature and animal depictions, as well as military and hunting scenes, mostly in South America and Russia. Hugo Ungewitter (1869-c. 1944) From 1887, Hugo Ungewitter visited the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. He received commissions from the afore-mentioned Academy and the Court of Berlin. From 1906, he lived in Berlin and painted mainly battle scenes. In 1913, he was appointed professor at the Court of Berlin. His favorite subjects were nature and animal depictions, as well as military and hunting scenes, mostly in South America and Russia. Works by Ungewitter has been fetching high prices at international auctions in recent years. Condition: Small losses to the frame in each corner; painting loose from frame; painting itself in generally good condition.
