Meissen Art Nouveau Porcelain, Gardener Girl with Dog, c. 1900

      Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Porcelain with white glaze, polychrome and gold-colored paint Germany, circa 1900 Design by Jakob Ungerer (1840-1920), model number T 62 Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1710 Underglaze blue crossed swords mark (pommel period, 1815-1924), pressed form number '76', incised model number 'T 62' and painter number '1.' Young peasant woman with a bun standing by a tree trunk on a round and profiled base, in one arm holding a basket of vegetables, in the other hand a bundle, a dog sitting to her right side Naturalistic plinth with sculpted plants and golden edges Total height, including the plinth: 26 cm Very good condition, 1st choice Literature: Krockenberger, Edles Meisssner Porzellan aus drei Jahrhunderten, p. 393 [Noble Meissen Porcelain from Three Centuries] Lovely Art Nouveau figure in the usual excellent Meissen quality This charming Meissen Art Nouveau figure was designed by Jakob Ungerer (1840-1920) around 1900. Born in Munich, the sculptor studied at the Munich Academy and opened his own studio in Munich in 1866. In 1902, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory purchased some figures from him. The present model shows a young gardener with a dog standing on a naturalistic round plinth. In her left arm, she holds a basket of vegetables, and in her right hand she carries a bundle. Ungerer's figure is characterized by a very detailed design, particularly notable at the dog's fur, the clothes of the gardener and the vegetable basket. The figure bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark (pommel period, from 1815 to 1924), the impressed form number '76', the incised model number 'T 62' and the painter's number '1'. It is of first choice and in very good condition, showing minor wear. The overall height, including the base, is 26 cm. Meissen Porcelain was known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China and was thus mostly of lower quality - the Chinese seldom gave their best ware to foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy the Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the high quality of the porcelain. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and they go as far as to have their own mine to win the needed kaolin, also known as china clay, for the production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a "master painter" in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it.
