He then finished his studies at the Academy in Leipzig. During his successful career as an etcher Unger received numerous awards including medals from expositions in Paris (1878), Vienna (1888) and Berlin (1891). Unger became most famous for his etchings after the paintings of both old masters and contemporary artists, and these reproductive works occupied most of his career. Original etchings -- that is, those both designed and etched by him -- were limited to only a small number. Original etching, Portrait of Frank Duveneck/The Smoker. Done after painting by William Merritt Chase. Inscribed in the plate "Wm M Chase 1875" l.l.. Image size 9 1/4 x 5 in. This print is based upon an oil portrait by William Merritt Chase of his good friend and fellow student Frank Duveneck. The young artists studied together at the Munich Academy in the 1870s. No longer extant, the original painting is thought to have been lost in a fire. The image is known only through Unger's etching. For a complete discussion of the portrait, see Ronald G. William Unger (1837-1932) The long-lived William Unger is important not only as an etcher but as an influential scholar and teacher. Serving as professor of graphic arts at the Vienna Academy he taught etching techniques to many of the finest Austrian, German and French artists of the early twentieth century. He was also a founder of Zeitschrift fur Bildendekunst (1866), an important journal which promoted etching, engraving and lithography. Unger's autobiography, Aus meinen leben, was published in Vienna in 1928. William Unger began his formal art studies in 1854 as a student of Joseph Keller, in Dusseldorf. He then finished his studies at the Academy in Leipzig. During his successful career as an etcher Unger received numerous awards including medals from expositions in Paris (1878), Vienna (1888) and Berlin (1891). William Unger (1837 Hannover - 1932 Innsbruck): Portrait of the actress Elizabeth Farren (c 1759-1829), 19th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Stamp: Lower middle Blank stamp, Gesellschaft Wien für Vervielfält. Kunst. Vienna. 19th century Inscription: Lower right monogrammed: "WU". At the lower part inscribed by another person: "Lawrence. Unger. Miss Farren". Date: 19th century Description: Lots of fabric, fur and piled-up hair dominate this portrait. It shows the actress Elizabeth Farren, later Countess of Derby, at the height of her career. She moves out of the picture, turns around and looks confidently at the viewer with a coquettish look. The lady loves a dramatic entrance. Her engaging temperament also seemed to have impressed the Earl of Derby, whose wife she became after a long courtship. The artist William Unger used as a model a commissioned painting by the artist Thomas Lawrence, painted about 100 years earlier. While Lawrence sets the lady in a picturesque English landscape, Unger only hints at the open sky and zooms in on the actress up to her waist. This version of the depiction would probably have been entirely to the liking of the lady, who is said to have felt too thin in Lawrence's original painting. And indeed, she appears more petite in the original painting, her gaze veiled and her body bent, as if a gust of wind had forced her to bend her knees. Despite the sitter's critical objections, the press was enthusiastic and Lawrence's standing as an artist thus secured. The contemporary newspaper "The Public Advertiser" wrote: "It is completely Elizabeth Farren: arch, spirited, elegant and engaging". Keywords: Actress, portrait, colour etching, 19th century, Realism, Fashion, United Kingdom,
