'In his remarks on colour, Ludwig Wittgenstein poses the question: “What is the essence of a visual image that we would call the image of a coloured transparent medium?” This question is essential to the on-going study of painting. It is about defining the character of an image as painted colour. Aristotle defines colour as “the border of the transparent on a clearly outlined body”. This is an excellent definition for the painter. It attaches colour to its materiality (albeit Aristotle transferring it to the outer edge of an object), which also means it is restricted to its material character in its appearance. On order to be able to develop an understanding of painted colour as a colour image, we need to comprehend colour and the logic of its form. A painting should be represented in a surrounding that allows the viewer to establish a relationship to it as a colour image. The essence of a painting has its place, that is to say it is only realised in the context of this relationship. One can speak of a viewing experience where a colour feeling unfolds in the context of its perception.' The picture carriers are mostly aluminum plates or press wood, on which he applies his paint layer over layer with his brush. Sprayed natural resin works as a bonding agent. The paint presence is the main theme of Umbergs works. Here a deep, absolute soaked black appears, which requires the whole visual sense. The fine surface structure of the pigments can only be felt by a direct physical confrontation. This way Umberg creates places with concentrated perception. Condition: The work is in good condition. The upper left margin has a big retouch, isolated small rubbing, small chips and bright stains. The dimensions are 96,2 x 99,5 cm. Günter Umberg (born 1942) Umberg studied 1963-1969 at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Antwerp, as well as at the Cologne factory schools. Since 1970 he works as a freelance artist in Cologne. He initially worked on fundamental issues of painting. He began at this time to paint black images, for which he became known. In 1982 he founded the the ‘Raum für Malerei’ in Cologne. He was from 2000 to 2007 professor of painting at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
