Ulreich is known for her modernist, stylized images of children and scenes of childhood, often incorporating animals and nature. She studied art in her native Kansas City, in New York at the Art Student's League, and in Chicago. There, she met her husband, the artist Edward Buk Ulreich, well known for his murals. In the mid-1920s, the couple spent time in Vienna and Paris, exploring modernist art before moving to New York, where both gained critical acclaim. Though she fell into relative obscurity after her death, her work has recently enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance. Ulreich's oeuvre was celebrated this summer through a comprehensive exhibition at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art which featured the extensive collection of her work held by Kendra and Allan Daniel and curated by Nichols B. Clark.

Nura Woodson Ulreich, American (1899-1950). Modernist studio ceramic pitcher with abstract geometric motifs, titled "Seven Seas". Created in 1949 by Nura Ulreich for Stonelain, the ceramics division of the American Association of Artists; signed "Nura" with copyright in glaze near bottom, Stonelain impressed mark underneath. This work appears as No. 44 in the Associated American Artists' 2015 index, "Art for Every Home". Dimensions: H 9.5" x W 9.75" x D 5.75" Condition: Crazing apparently inherent to glaze; a few marks of discoloration and flea bites to handle and rim.

Nura Woodson Ulreich (1899-1950) An untitled composition of winged cow, 1949 Stonelain pottery, produced for Associated American Artists, New York. Stonelain Pottery was decorated by member artists of the Associated American Artists, a New York venture that began in 1934 and brought the works of many accomplished artists to the middle classes, including those of Missouri artist Thomas Hart Benton. Prints were the primary medium but as seen here, pottery was also produced for a short while. These designs were executed by recognized and accomplished member artists. Measures 7 x 6.5 inches.
