      JOSEF ULLMANN (Czech / Bohemian 1870 - 1922) - Winter landscape

      Est: -

around 1900 | technique: oil on cardboard | 35 x 44.5 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description Josef Ullmann, a prominent Czech landscape painter, captured a winter landscape with a quiet and peaceful atmosphere in this painting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work shows his ability to work masterfully with color and light. Here, Ullmann uses soft shades of blue, gray and white to evoke a cold winter's day when the landscape is covered with snow and a quiet frozen stream. The trees, scattered in the background, create an impression of depth and perspective, while the whole work appears harmonious and balanced. This scene is typical of Ullmann's style, where he can convey the atmosphere of calm winter nature with an emphasis on its natural beauty.

      JOSEF ULLMANN 1870 - 1922 - WINTER LANDSCAPE

      Est: -

Artistically, Ullmann was formed by the Chittussi landscape and by the landscape trends of the Art Nouveau movement, with which he was able to become more intimately acquainted in Munich. In 1895 he saw the exhibition of Worpswede artists and their atmospheric, melancholic canvases at the Glaspalast, and thus his earliest works bring together Romantic Realism with decorative Art Nouveau. As his brushwork became more relaxed, the visuals in his paintings became bolder and Ullmann’s technique moved towards larger and smaller spots; the paint is spread dry into the support or piled up in impastos, combining oils and temperas and achieving true technical mastery. JOSEF ULLMANN 1870 - 1922 - PATH NEAR THE FIELD

      Est: -

An impressive painting with a high horizon and a quiet landscape in the high summer, when ears of corn ripen and poppies grow between them, comes from Ullman's work after graduating from the landscape school with prof. J. Mařák at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1900, his paintings have appeared regularly on the pages of Zlatá Praha magazine and other periodicals, and he has exhibited extensively in Prague and throughout Bohemia. Ullmann was artistically shaped by the Chittussian landscape and also by the tendencies of landscape Art Nouveau, which he had the opportunity to get to know in Munich - in 1895 he saw an exhibition of Worpsweds with their moody melancholy canvases in Glaspalast, thus combining romantic-realistic views with Art Nouveau decorativism. Gradually, with the release of the brush presentation, the visual component strengthens and Ullmann moves to the technique of larger or smaller stains, spreads the paint dry to the base and piles in pastes, combines oil and tempera and achieves real technical mastery. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "J Ullman"

      Est: -

1912 48.5 x 53 cm (h x w) Oil on cardboard. Signed lower right: "J. Ullmann / 1912". This springtime landscape with an apple orchard in bloom is an authentic work painted by Josef Ullmann in 1912. The fresh, lyrically impressive painting based on classical principles of composition is executed in plein air Impressionist style. Important Czech landscape artist Josef Ullmann initially studied in Munich, but later became a student of professors Pirner and Marák at the Academy in Prague. He was a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists. He presented large landscape paintings at his first exhibitions at the Rudolfinum, but later he showed smaller landscapes and then primarily focused on depicting the mood and natural atmosphere. In around 1910 he permanently devoted himself to pure Impressionism, strongly accenting yellow, red, white, blue and other pure colors to achieve expressively compelling results, especially in winter and summer themes.
