Paul worked five years as a commercial artist in Dayton before the Cleveland School of Art from 1916 to 1920 and studying under such well known artists as Henry Keller and Frank Wilcox. He began his teaching career at the West Technical School in 1921. Both Paul and jean Ulen received scholarships to complete their art education abroad. They first went to London in 1922-23 with Paul studying at the Slade School, primarily under Henry Tonks (1862-1937).
