They are all Untitled with subtitles in parentheses that refer to subjects as varied as popular culture, his interest in spaghetti western movies and the artist's ideas about death and the human struggle. The subtitle of this work, Granuloma, is a medical term that refers to a small area of inflammation, usually found in the lungs. Uklanski has been quoted as saying he thinks of death all the time as part of his Polish heritage. These paintings are quiet and meditative in their suggestion of splattered blood and they also represent the red and white flag of his native land. The paintings themselves are laborious to make. Uklanski meticulously drops each bit of color onto the canvas or board, layer after layer. The series was begun to commemorate the Warsaw Uprisings during WWII and the commonly held idea that his countrymen spilled their blood to preserve the nation. Through the process of creating each work, Uklanski began to feel that they were more about the act of making them than the original idea. In this way the series represents Uklanski's far-ranging use of medium, choice of subject matter and his controversial and fluid attitude towards his art. The artist. His multidisciplinary practice explores postwar European and American aesthetics and politics as a mode of examining popular culture. It is through the deconstruction of social traditions that he emphasizes the relevance of community in resisting the crumbling of social infrastructure. The politics of gaze sit at the center of his artistic practice and adopts underappreciated techniques as relevant and necessary modes of expression. The chaos at the center of Untitled (Dark and Stormy), as evidenced by the canvas-length tear and estuarial offshoots, clashes with the richness and vibrancy of the rich color to raise questions regarding conceptual intent. “I like the contrast of beauty and something that symbolizes a complete disaster,” explains Uklanski.[1] This focus on the fantastical with minimal evidence of the artist’s hand allows the juxtaposition of color and form to transcend. Though a prominent technique of modernist circles of the early twentieth century, collage is often disregarded as a contemporary practice. Uklanski’s embrace of the outmoded medium highlights the immediacy of the portrayed calamity. The tearing of the paper, a necessity of the composition, serves as an act of aggression to mirror the aesthetic of the work. The destruction of the material, the tearing of the paper, represents the radical and revolutionary possibilities of an aesthetic built upon the subversion of tradition.
