Landscape painter, Painter

Fred Uhlman (19 January 1901 – 11 April 1985) was a German-English writer, painter and lawyer of Jewish origin.

Fred Uhlman was born in Stuttgart, Germany, into a prosperous middle-class Jewish family. He studied at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich and Tübingen from where, in 1923, he graduated with a degree in Law followed by a Doctorate in Canon and Civil Law.

In March 1933, two months after Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor, Uhlman moved to Paris to start a new life; but, as long as he had been living in France, he encountered many difficulties; foreigners were not permitted to take paid employment[citation needed], and were immediately expelled from France if caught doing so.[1] Uhlman supported himself by drawing and painting, and selling his work privately when he could. At one stage he supplemented his income by selling tropical fish. Uhlman's star as a painter was in the ascendant, but buyers were hard to come by.

In April 1936 he moved to Tossa de Mar, a small fishing village on the Costa Brava in Spain, but shortly thereafter the Spanish Civil War broke out, and in August he decided to return to Paris, via Marseille. Here, while making a telephone call from a café to Diana Croft, a friend in London whom he had met in Tossa de Mar, his wallet, containing most of his money and his passport, was stolen from his jacket left unattended at his table. A foreigner in France without a passport effectively became a stateless person and subject to official harassment, internment and possible expulsion. Demoralised and in despair, he gave the café proprietor his Paris telephone number and continued his journey to Paris. The next day he received a telephone call at his hotel; the caller informed him that he had the wallet and passport and would mail them to Uhlman the next day, because he was a co-réligionnaire of Uhlman's, but would retain ten percent of the money in the wallet 'to cover expenses'. The wallet and passport arrived the following day. On 3 September 1936, Fred Uhlman landed in England with no money and unable to speak the language. Two months later, on 4 November 1936, he married Diana Croft, daughter of the right wing Henry Page Croft (later Lord Croft), against her parents' strongest wishes.[2]

They set up home on Downshire Hill, in London's Hampstead and it became a favourite cultural and artistic meeting place for the large group of refugees and exiles who, like Uhlman, had been forced to flee their homeland. He founded the Free German League of Culture, whose members included Oskar Kokoschka and Stefan Zweig, though he parted company with it when he felt it coming under communist domination.

Nine months after the outbreak of the Second World War, Uhlman, with thousands of other enemy aliens, was, in June 1940, interned by the British Government, in Hutchinson Camp on the Isle of Man. Here he met the artist Kurt Schwitters as fellow internee, who took his portrait.[3] He was released six months later and reunited with his wife and with his daughter, Caroline, who was born while he was interned.[2]

Uhlman had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Le Niveau in Paris in 1935. In London he exhibited at the Zwemmer Gallery in 1938, from then on he exhibited regularly in one man shows as well as mixed exhibitions throughout Britain. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Leighton House Museum in London in 1968. His work is represented in many important public galleries, including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Uhlman's memoirs, The Making of an Englishman, were published in 1960.

His novel Reunion was published in 1971. Virtually ignored when first published, it was re-published in 1977 to critical acclaim, drawing praise from Arthur Koestler, who wrote the introduction to this beautifully executed edition, far easier on the eye than the earlier Adam edition of 1971. Reunion is about the forces that end the friendship and childhood of Hans Schwarz, the son of a Jewish doctor in pre-World War II Germany, and Count Konradin von Hohenfels an upper class schoolmate with whom Hans becomes infatuated. The short, poetic narrative chronicles their intense, innocent friendship and concludes with a revelation that counters superficial judgements about human character.

When I first read Fred Uhlman's Reunion' some years ago, I wrote to the author (whom I only knew by reputation as a painter) and told him I considered it a minor masterpiece. The qualifying adjective needs perhaps a word of explanation. It was meant to refer to the small size of the book, and to the impression that although its theme was the ugliest tragedy in man's history, it was written in a nostalgic minor key.

– Arthur Koestler, Introduction to Reunion, 1976.

Uhlman became a collector of African sculpture, and was able to accumulate a large and important collection with modest expenditure. He donated his collection to Newcastle Museum, the year before his death, where it is on permanent show.

Fred Uhlman died in London on 11 April 1985, survived by his wife and two children. He was buried in Yarpole in Herefordshire.[2]

In 1989, the dramatic film Reunion,[4] based on Fred Uhlman's novella of the same title, was directed by Jerry Schatzberg from a screenplay by Harold Pinter. Reunion has also been adapted for the stage by Ronan Wilmot and was premiered at Dublin's New Theatre on 9 November 2010.

Fred Uhlman, German/British 1901-1985 - Welsh Landscape no.1; ink on paper, 24.6 x 34.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Piccadilly Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); The Hon. (?) Makins, purchased from the above on 8th September 1967; private collection Note: Uhlman's depictions of the Welsh landscape are amongst the most important and celebrated of the artists career. Uhlman first visited Northern Wales in the 1940s as a refuge from the ongoing. He and his family would return repeatedly, eventually acquiring a holiday home in Croesor Valley. Like his fellow emigre Josef Herman, Wales was to have a major impact on his art and his reputation in Britain, and Uhlman embraced the isolation of the landscape, creating mystical images, such as the present work. Uhlman's Welsh works were first shown in 1942 at the Leicester Galleries, London. This created a link in his work with the burgeoning Neo-Romantic artists in London, such as Graham Sutherland and John Minton, as well as with his fellow-German, the 19th-century Romantic master, Caspar David Friedrich. He studied at Winchester College and continued his education at Christ Church College in Oxford. Knollys interest in the arts and his reputation as an art critic grew during the 1920s and in 1936 Knollys opened The Storran Gallery, opposite Harrods with his partner Frank Coombs. The gallery exhibited renowned artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Maurice Utrillo, Ivon Hitchens, Pablo Picasso and Victor Pasmore to name just a few. Coombs tragically passed away in an air raid during World War II in Belfast in 1941. Knollys closed the gallery shortly afterwards. In 1945, Knollys along with music critic and novelist Edward Sackville-West and music critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor purchased a Georgian rectory in Long Crichel, Dorset. Along with James Lees-Milne, literary critic Raymond Mortimer and gay activist and eye surgeon Patrick Trevor-Roper, the house became a centre for young creatives, where these young men and their friends could immerse themselves in books, music, art, and poetry. These passionate young men hosted guests such as Ben Nicholson, Duncan Grant, Sibyl Colefax and film director Anthony Asquith. Knollys joined James Lees-Milne working for the National Trust during World War II and published diaries recording their trips to some of the most renowned British country houses. In 1965, Knollys, a well-respected art critic and member of the Bloomsbury art group inherited a collection of artworks which had belonged to Edward Sackville-West. In 1967 Knollys and Mattei Radev purchased a hunting lodge in Hampshire and they both painted and worked in the artist's studio attached to the lodge. Knollys' interest in the arts continued and he added to the collection right up until his death in 1991. Knollys' collection was bequeathed to Mattei Radev, who continued to grow the important collection. Mattei Radev became an iconic member of the artistic and literary Bloomsbury group. Radev was a Bulgarian émigré who settled initially in Glasgow after escaping Bulgaria through Turkey. When he first arrived in London, he started working at Whittington Hospital as an orderly and met eye surgeon Patrick Trevor-Roper. Trevor-Roper was a gay activist and introduced Radev to likeminded friends in London. Influenced by these new acquaintances in artistic circles Radev decided to pursue an apprenticeship in framing. In 1960 he set up his own workshop in Fitzrovia with the help of a financial loan from Eardley Knollys. Clients included John Banting, Graham Sutherland, and Duncan Grant. The framers continued under Radev's management until the 1990s. Radev visited Long Crichel many times and met his life-long lover E.M. Forster, the notable novelist and literary critic. The Radev collection represents the three strong individuals involved, Sackville-West who championed Modernism, Eardley Knollys whose passion for French Impressionism shines through and Radev for his loyalty to British artists with whom he was friends and in business with.
