          Brian Uhing (b. 1975) - Don Quixote

          Est: ₱1,600,000 - ₱2,080,000

Don Quixote signed (lower left) oil on canvas 17" x 13" (43 cm x 33 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, Contemporary Discoveries, Hong Kong, September 12, 2023, Lot 5537 EXHIBITED: Art Verité Gallery, Procession of the Slightly Mad (Joint Exhibition with S-Ann Ch'i), Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, May 6 - May 15, 2021 WRITE UP: “When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!” ― Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote Don Quixote peers from inside the canvas, fixing his soulful gaze on the audience. On his head, in lieu of a hat, is an upside-down box with the word 'fragile' embossed on the side. He is dressed in tattered cardboard boxes. On his hand is a bright red pinwheel; behind him is a window looking over a winding rural road with the mountains on the horizon. In a masterful move, contemporary artist Brian Uhing evokes the classical masters while simultaneously subverting the uptight stereotype that comes with a traditional art style by injecting his signature humor. Growing up in an environment that nurtured his artistic inclinations, the influence of artists like René Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, and Balthus is highly evident in his works. "If I could marry the richness of Titian's work with the humor of Magritte, that would be something I wouldn't mind seeing," he once told ANCX. One look into Uhing's oeuvre is proof enough that he manages to combine this unlikely pairing, as evidenced in his work Don Quixote. Don Quixote, the titular character in Miguel Cervantes's 17th-century novel, is a middle-aged nobleman obsessed with knighthood and chivalry. Armed with a vivid imagination, he sets out to become a knight to protect the helpless, perceiving his ordinary rural scenery as grandiose medieval adventures. Although his delusions often lead him to comical misunderstandings, Don Quixote is an image of idealism, courage, and chivalry. Uhing's work is a visual treat brimming with symbolism and humor. In Don Quixote, the character's "armor" is actually made of flimsy cardboard, symbolizing his delusions of being a chivalrous knight when, in fact, he is a middle-aged man in the province. The window behind him depicts a pastoral scenery, clearly devoid of the grandiose castles that often plague his fantasies. However, on his hand is a pinwheel, bright red amidst the cool tones. A pinwheel is a visual representation of a carefree childhood, of youthful energy in a cycle of stopping and starting. Don Quixote may be a man in the throes of his delusions, but his genuine desire to protect the helpless remains his driving force. In this masterful work, Uhing utilizes his classical art style, vivacious humor, and brilliant symbolism to strike this delicate balance. (Hannah Valiente)

        • Brian Uhing (b. 1975) - Song of Cerberus
          Dec. 02, 2023

Brian Uhing (b. 1975) - Song of Cerberus

          Est: ₱2,400,000 - ₱3,120,000

Song of Cerberus signed (lower right) dated 2021 oil on canvas 30” x 24” (76 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UPAt first glance, Brian Uhing’s works boast the classic technique of Western art – the composition is perfect, the colors balanced, the perspective aligned. But upon closer look, the art takes on a strange and unusual form; suddenly there is an anachronistic phone in a period artwork, a woman’s hair growing into a tree’s foliage, a puzzle piece taken from a woman’s chest. Herein lies Uhing’s brilliance – he is a master at blending the conservative and the surrealist. Uhing paints in the classical Flemish and Venetian styles but injects them with playful touches of surrealism in a style reminiscent of old masters. “My parents believed in the powerful influence of books on art, so I grew up immersed in the images of the old masters,” he said in an ANCX interview. “I loved how their works appear submerged in deep water and would give off their own faint light. It just filled me with this haunting, romantic feeling.” In this 2021 work entitled The Song of Cerberus, Uhing successfully marries the richness of Titian’s work with the humor of René Magritte. Drawn a la the classical portraits of the masters, Uhing’s surrealist touches come through the details he adds throughout, with the hair of the subject transforming midway into a fluffy poodle. The splashes of humor are not added on a whim, with Uhing saying, “[Those] elements are not added for the sake of being fanciful and strange, but are tightly meshed within the narrative of the piece. My work requires that you take the time to string together the story, and in there lies the reward!” (Hannah Valiente)

Brian Uhing (b. 1975) Dreaming of Travel signed (lower left) oil on canvas 17" x 13" (43 cm x 33 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Brian Uhing summons the visual language of the classical master as he narrates a playfully poignant allegory akin to the spirit of the age In his works, one can see how Uhing takes inspiration from the masters of yore. The colors of Titian, the playfulness of Bruegel, and the enigma of Magritte. But his treatment of his subject lends itself more towards the school of surrealism and even postmodernity; Uhing labored countless hours to quench his obsession for perfection by employing meticulous craftsmanship towards every detail of the piece. In Uhing’s Dreaming of Travel, one is greeted by a portrait of Marie Antoinette holding a teacup and surrounded by. As one of the more well-known members of the French aristocracy, Antoinette is often seen as a larger-than-life figure; an individual whose mythos is often greater than reality. The title seemingly suggests that the work explores Antionette’s introduction to the Palace of Versailles. Coming from a relatively less regal background, Antoinette was bound by the different rituals and ceremonies that were expected of royalty. Thus, some accounts would note that though Antoinette had moved up the social ladder, her duties stifled some of the freedoms she used to enjoy. The theme of freedom is further emphasized by the inclusion of the birds, which are flying out of the cup, headed somewhere beyond the canvas; effectively acting as a metaphor for a sort of emancipation Antoinette could no longer experience. Brian Uhing (b. 1975) Abandoned Monuments signed and dated 2020 (lower right) oil on canvas 40" x 33" (102 cm x 84 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Manila Contemporary artist Brian Uhing subverts the classical notions of Western art under the authority of symbolism and surrealism. Uhing's refined paintings of classical figures lean towards the traditional, specifically the Flemish and Venetian painting style or what he calls "glazing galore." His art process is inspired by the old masters, such as Félix Resurrección Hidalgo and Jacob van Ruisdael. He injects it with dark humor rendered in his distinct surrealist approach. "They [old masters] didn't paint what was before them, but instead focused more on how to show everything at its most exaggerated, dramatic advantage," Uhing said. In a 2021 interview with ANCX, Uhing recounted his childhood and narrated how the old masters influenced his art. "My parents believed in the powerful influence of books on art, so I grew up immersed in the images of the old masters, the artist said. "I loved how their works appeared submerged in deep water and would give off their own faint light. It just filled me with this haunting, romantic feeling. Then I discovered the works of Magritte, Duchamp, and Balthus, who used their art to play pranks! I thought, if I could marry the richness of Titian's work with the humor of Magritte, that would be something I wouldn't mind seeing." Abandoned Monuments depicts a weary elderly man with his hand holding onto a white flag traditionally attributed to capitulation. With sunken eyes and wrinkled skin, the man's face unveils a face that had been worn by the passage of time. He is portrayed as hiding within a "shell," representing the prime version of himself—younger, bolder, and high-spirited. Miniature toy soldiers dressed in medieval crusader regalia are seen conducting an offensive into his façade. According to Uhing, the painting conveys "a point when you decide to let go of an idea of yourself and allow it to succumb to whatever your fate may bring." This work also serves as a visual commentary on late-life crises. As we grow older, we deeply long for a period in our lives where our strength, vigor, and success were at their greatest. However, this sentimentality and nostalgia can make us vulnerable to a late-life existential dread. Notwithstanding our accomplishments and triumphs, we continue striving to prove our worth and merit in this mundane world. As our impermanence becomes more conspicuous, we may experience frustration, a loss of identity, and the feeling that our life has already reached its culmination. But these predicaments are, in fact, opportunities in disguise for us to acknowledge that we need to have a genuine connection with those around us before it becomes too late. Uhing's work reminds us that existence is not entirely derived from worldly gains but also the essence of our relationship with other humans; isolation is fatal. Moreover, we may not have preserved and sustained our youth due to the transience of human life, but at least we have grown to become more resilient amid the vicissitudes life has still to thrust.
