      UENAKA CHOKUSAI: A SIX-PANEL BYOBU (FOLDING SCREEN) WITH SAMURAI, DATED 1919 By Uenaka Chokusai (1885-1977), signed Chokusai Japan, dated 1919, Taisho period (1912-1926) Ink and watercolors on gold-leaf paper, mounted on six black-lacquered panels. Finely painted with a group of samurai on horseback, the ascending archers led by a standard bearer passing a flowering prunus tree with white petals delicately fluttering in the breeze. The leftmost panel inscribed to the lower left Tsuchinoto-hitsuji shoshu Kinrin-sodo ni oite utsusu, CHOKUSAI [Painted in the early autumn in the year of tsuchinoto-hitsuji (Taisho 8, 1919), at the Kinrin-sodo studio, by Chokusai], and with two seals of the artist, Uenaka no in [seal of Uenaka] and Chokusai. SIZE 376 x 172.5 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear, little soiling, few minor tears, two larger tears have been stabilized. Uenaka Chokusai (1885-1977) was born in Nara and studied painting under Fukada Chokujyo (1861-1947), Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908) and Yamamoto Shunkyo (1891-1933). He also became a disciple of Nichiren Buddhism under Tanaka Chigaku (1861-1939). His work is in the collections of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.       UENAKA CHOKUSAI: A SCROLL PAINTING OF THREE GIRLS PLAYING UNDER PINE TREES By Uenaka Chokusai (1885-1977), with artist signature and two seals Japan, 20 th century Painted with ink and colors on silk, with a silk brocade frame, and mounted as a hanging scroll, depicting three young girls at play under two gnarled pine trees, one ‘riding’ a branch using a scarf as reins, pretending to be a witch riding a broom, another holding up a flag mounted on a long bamboo stalk, the third obscured by the tree and only visible from the back. SIZE 210 x 51 cm (total) and 129.5 x 39.5 cm (image only) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minor creases, minimal soiling, slightly browned. Provenance: French private collection. Born in Nara, Chokusai's real name was Naojiro. He learnt under Fukada Chokujyo (1861-1947) and Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908) as well as studying the doctrine of Nichiren Buddhism with Tanaka Chigaku (1861-1939). He also became a pupil of Yamamoto Shunkyo (1891-1933), exhibiting his Buddhist works at the Bunten and Teiten.       20th century Kakejiku, in ink, colour and gold on silk, depicting two warriors on horseback, Minamoto no Yoshitomo being chased by Taira no Shigemori as they ride past snow-laden trees from the 'Taikenmon' scene in Kyoto, in the Tale of Heike; with tomobako titled Taikenmon no zu and signed by the artist Chokusai dai with seal Chokusai. 140cm x 50cm (55 1/8in x 19 5/8in).
