    ALEXANDRE UBELESKI PARIS 1628 - 1715

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

AENEAS AND ANCHISES IN HADES measurements note 59 by 88 in.; 149.8 by 223.5 cm. oil on canvas NOTE Although born in Paris, Ubeleski was in fact of Polish origin. He trained in Paris at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture before heading to Rome in 1672 where he attended the Académie de France. The obvious imprint of Nicolas Poussin aside, the present painting and indeed much of the artist's early work, reveal the influence of Charles Le Brun, who in 1648 helped found the Académie that Ubeleski joined in 1682. For further comment on the artist and his oeuvre see P. Rosenberg, "Un Emule polonais de Le Brun: Alexandre Ubelesqui", in Arte & Hist., vol. XXII, 1990, pp. 163-87.
