Charles Tyrrell (b.1950) Swing (1989) oil on board signed, titled and dated 1989 verso h:120  w:120 cm. Provenance: Whyte's, Dublin, 23rd February 2015, Lot 40; Private Collection One of Ireland's foremost abstract painters, Charles Tyrrell moved to the edge of the ocean on the Beara Peninsula in 1984 after many years in Dublin. Observers noted that the atmosphere of the place influenced the work, as here for example, of this most urban of artists. Geometric subdivisions underly virtually all of his compositions. The diagonals making four triangles here inspired speculation that he might have in mind a reference to the four provinces.

Charles Tyrrell (b.1950) Swing (1989) oil on board signed, titled and dated 1989 on reverse h:120  w:120 cm. Provenance: Whyte's, Dublin, 23rd February 2015, Lot 40; Private Collection One of Ireland's foremost abstract artists, Charles Tyrrell makes works in series. His paintings are process-driven and the starting point is usually a symmetrical subdivision of the surface. Here diagonals divide a square into four right-angled triangles. There is some interplay between the areas but mostly each seems animated by its own internal energy: a four seasons, perhaps? Tyrrell is not a landscape artist, but it has been noted that his palette and textures became notably atmospheric following his move to the Beara Peninsula in 1984.

Charles Tyrrell (b.1950)P2.08Oil on aluminium, 26 x 26cm (10¼ x 10¼'')Signed and dated 2008 versoProvenance: With the Taylor GalleriesCharles Tyrrell was born in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland, in 1950. He studied painting at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, graduating in 1974. His work is represented in all major Irish collections and in 1982 he was made a member of Aosdána. He lives and works in Allihies on the Beara Peninsula in Co. Cork. This landscape is fundamental to his work as a painter, remotely sequestered against the wild Atlantic coast. However, the relationship between his environment and his paintings is not a straightforward case of image and representation. It is rather that Tyrrell’s abstract canvases are imbued with the sense of the landscape’s structures, exploring its fundamental shapes and forms, which take on a profound simplicity of expression. Built on a geometric grid, traversing the canvas into sections, a delicate but dynamic equilibrium is played out between the horizontal and vertical lines. In this manner he explores the more traditional aspects of landscape painting, boundaries, horizon lines, perspectives. While his work moves beyond resemblance it still focuses on questions of identifying our landscape through patterns, textures or colours, all of which frame, in the form of a literal and metaphorical grid, the act of perception. He has just had a successful exhibition at the Taylor Galleries Dublin.

Charles Tyrrell (b.1950) SLOW TURN, 1987 oil on canvas signed, titled and dated on reverse 178 by 175cm., 70 by 69in. Charles Tyrrell was born in Trim, Co Meath, in 1950. He studied at the National College of Art and Design from 1969 to 1974. Trips to the United States, where he was struck by the work of a range of American painters including Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and others, encouraged him to work on a scale that was unusually large in Ireland at the time. He quickly established himself as an abstract painter of real boldness and ability. He developed a personal, grid-based pictorial vocabulary based on rhythmic subdivisions of the picture plane, combining textural painting with lines, angles and arcs, an "intuitive geometry." As he remarked in an interview with Brian Fallon in 1993, though, he was not hung up on a purist definition of abstraction: "I do not regard the abstract stance as an entrenched one..." Having been based in inner city Dublin, in 1984 he moved with his family to live and work in a house overlooking the sea near Allihies on the Beara Peninsula. Exposed to the elements, it's a spectacular setting by any standard, and it's fair to say that it brought Tyrrell into the closest engagement with the landscape that we have seen in his paintings to date. Slow Turn is one of a series of large, square-formatted paintings first exhibited at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin in 1987 (in a two-person show, with Theo McNab, titled 'Surface and Structure'). All the pictures display the same diagonal pattern, their geometry underpinning passages of beautifully atmospheric textural painting. They don't represent the landscape directly, but they are certainly responsive to its shifting light, its colour and its subtle tonality. As he noted himself at the time: "It is hard not to see my work as landscape but I have not consciously gone after it..." Writing in 1994, Dorothy Walker described this group of paintings as "certainly his finest from that period." In them, Tyrrell acknowledges his debt to some Irish artists, notably Barrie Cooke and Patrick Collins. Aidan Dunne April, 2010
