    Alfred J. Tyler 1933-2011 untitled n.d. lithograph 11 x 14 inches signed and numbered 3/5 Tyler began his artistic studies on Saturdays at the age of 12 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was influenced by his art teacher at Englewood High School. In 1956 Al graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While at the Art Institute he became interested in mural painting. This led to a commission to paint a mural at Sexton Elementary School in Chicago. After graduating he fulfilled a two year commitment as staff artist for the Safety Office of the First Marine Corps Division, United States Marine Corps. After resuming civilian life Al took a position as a staff artist at S.M. Edison Commercial Co. Encouraged by Dr. Margaret Burroughs, visual artists and founder of the DuSable Museum of African-American History in Chicago, Al pursued graduate studies in painting and the Fresco technique of mural painting at La Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas in Mexico City, Mexico. Throughout his prolific career Al has co-owned the 353 East Gallery and the Afam Studio and Gallery. He was a staff artist in the Planning Department for the City of Evanston for 34 years and served as an adviser for many art-related projects throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. His works are in many permanent collections including the DuSable Museum of African-American History, Chicago IL; D.C. General Hospital, Washington D.C.; Illinois State Museum, Springfield, IL; McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago, IL; The Chicago Public Library, Rogers Park Branch; Soft Sheen Company, Chicago, IL; Johnson Publishing Company, Chicago, IL; University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, IL; Englewood High School, Chicago, IL and several others. My medias are pen and ink, pastels, markers, serigraphs and oils. I have many subject matters, but my main subject matter is the glorification of the African- American people." A visual artist for more than 60 years, Tyler graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956, and later pursued graduate studies in painting and the fresco technique of mural painting at La Escuela Nacional De Artes Plasticas in Mexico City , Mexico . Throughout his career, he developed wide-ranging artistic talents, including operating a gallery and producing art as a 30-year employee of the City of Evanston, IL.
