Painter

Raimondo or Ramón Tusquets y Maignon (Barcelona, 1837 - Rome, 11 March, 1904) was an Italian-Spanish painter, known for his eclectic subjects, ranging from orientalist themes, historical compositions to genre scenes of the countryside in Campania.

Tusquets was a son of a wealthy Barcelonese merchant who obligated him, in the first years of his adult life, to continue the family line of commerce. After his father died, Tusquets became his artist. He began studies with Ramón Moliné and shortly after, subsidized his own move to Rome, where he studied in the Chigi Academy and established relations with the circle of Catalan painters who were settled there.

While he remained in Italy, he never severed artistic links with Spain. In 1867 he sent to the National Exhibition a painting titled “El mendigo o Periódico” (The beggar or Newspaper) awarded a medal of third class. His exhibited in Spain throughout the last third of the 19th century. Thus, he got a medal of second class for his work Le Opere, campiña romana in 1871, took part in the Exhibition of Barcelona in 1867, and the International Exhibition of Fine arts of the Town hall of Barcelona in 1886.

But, simultaneously, his success in Spain and his foreign contacts allowed him to appear in the international exhibitions such as the one in Naples in 1877, where he won a diploma of honor with Al toque del Ave María, the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1876 or the one in Paris in 1878.

He was trained and for many years active in Naples painting in oil and watercolor. He mixed Spanish and Italian influences. Once in Italy, he became a close friend of the Spaniard Mariano Fortuny, who influenced him to paint orientalist themes, as well as the views of Rome and its surroundings. However, at the same time, the influence of Domenico Morelli and the group of Neapolitan School of Portici is also observed in his paintings. With time, his artistic ambitions within the canons of the epoch led him to great themes of genre and history.

In 1886, he painted five large canvas on Catalan history for the residence of Miguel Boada (Proclamation of the Prince of Viana, Fiveller and Ferdinand of Antequera, Embarcation of Jaime I to Mallorca, Roger de Lluria and the son of the count of Anjou y The Countess of Urgell asking for grace from the Count of Antequera).

He was nominated President of the International Artistic Circle of Rome and was asked to paint the official portrait of Maria Cristina for the town hall of Barcelona. He later produced paintings like Después del Oficio del Pontificado (1888), Joven argelina (1891), Guardia suizo del Vaticano, and La fuga. His paintings were published in most important illustrated magazines of the time and exhibited on International Expositions. The Sala Parés of Barcelona dedicated an exposition to his works; he collaborated frequently with the publication “Album Salón”.[2]

Among his works are: La fuga interrotta and La conca dell' Ave Maria, exhibited at Naples in 1877. At Turin, in 1880, he exhibited two oils, Il bosco and La laguna; and three watercolors: La befana, Svizzero del Papa, and Toilette.[3]

      Est: €3,000 - €4,000

RAMÓN TUSQUETS I MAIGNON (Barcelona, 1837 - Rome, 1904). "Dante's Inferno", 1881. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 35 x 46 cm; 44 x 55 cm (frame). In this painting, Tusquets freely interprets Canto III of the Divine Comedy, and imagines the landscape in which Dante is led to the gates of Hell as a shady and cavernous place. Tusquets begins his studies with Ramón Moliné, and at the same time publishes some of his caricatures in "El tros de paper", signed under the pseudonym Patufet. He then travels to Italy on his own, where he will live for the rest of his life. After a year's stay in Rome, where he studied at the Chigi Academy and joined the circle of Catalan painters living there, he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1867), where he was awarded a third-class medal. He also took part in the Barcelona Exhibition of the same year, where he presented the work "Kitchen", which was acquired by the Provincial Council. In his production of this stage are frequent oriental themes, directly influenced by the work of Fortuny, and views of the countryside and the surroundings of Rome. In 1869 he travels through Andalusia with the Italian Pio Joris, taking notes for compositions such as "El requiebro". In 1871 he sends from Rome a work to the National, being awarded with the second medal. In 1872 he became a close friend of Fortuny, and they traveled together to Naples. There they became acquainted with the latest tendencies of the Portici group and, in particular, became interested in the work of Domenico Morelli. At this time, Tusquets paints landscapes of Naples and Amalfi, and specializes in compositions of rural landscapes with figures dressed in traditional costumes. At Fortuny's death he reproduces in an impressive painting his funeral, where the influence of the "macchiaioli" can be appreciated. In 1875 he exhibited several paintings at the International Circle of Rome, being highly praised by the Italian critics. In 1877 he was awarded the diploma of honor, the only one reserved for foreigners, at the Naples Exhibition, and the Italian Government acquired his work. During these years his works are exhibited in many European cities, being awarded at the Universal Exhibitions of Vienna (1876) and Paris (1878). In 1880 he exhibited for the first time at the Sala Parés in Barcelona. Settled definitively in Rome, Tusquets is named president of the International Artistic Circle of the city. With his works of the eighties he will be consecrated in the official historicist genre, so far from the simple compositions of his previous stages. During his last years he treated a wide range of themes, depicting orientalist scenes as well as customs and historicist scenes. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museum of Montserrat and the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

      Est: €7,000 - €8,000

RAMÓN TUSQUETS I MAIGNON (Barcelona, 1837 - Rome, 1904). "Rural scene, Italy". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 100 x 74 cm; 114 x 88 cm (frame). In this genre scene, an almost photographic realist will and a romantic idealisation coincide, the result of Busquets' sincere love for these places where time slows down. The vertical format favours the amplitude of the sky, clean except for the subtle clouds through which the morning light filters. These extract toasted tones with amber cadences from the grass and straw. The young woman tending the animals in the farmyard, silent, watches the newly hatched chicks with an absent air. With masterly technique, each of the old slabs of the farmhouse, each trunk, each blade of grass, is described.... However, the detail does not neglect the general, atmospheric impression of rich contrasts of light. Tusquets began his studies with Ramón Moliné, and at the same time published some of his caricatures in "El tros de paper", signed under the pseudonym Patufet. He then travelled to Italy on his own, where he would live for the rest of his life. After a year's stay in Rome, where he studied at the Accademia Chigi and joined the circle of Catalan painters who lived there, he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1867), where he was awarded a third-class medal. He also took part in the Barcelona Exhibition of the same year, where he presented the work "Cocina" ("Kitchen"), which was acquired by the Diputació de Barcelona. Oriental themes, directly influenced by Fortuny's work, and views of the countryside and the environs of Rome are frequent in his production during this period. In 1869 he travelled around Andalusia with the Italian Pio Joris, taking notes for compositions such as "El requiebro". In 1871 he sent a work from Rome to the National Competition and was awarded a second medal. In 1872 he struck up a deep friendship with Fortuny, and they undertook a trip to Naples together. RAMÓN TUSQUETS I MAIGNON (Barcelona, 1837 - Rome, 1904). "Day of Procession. Rome, ca.1890. Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Defects in the frame. Measurements: 73 x 98 cm; 116 x 138 cm. (frame). Tusquets made this painting in Rome, the city that inspired the best of his paintings. He often combined the architectural element (ancient ruins, Renaissance or Baroque buildings) with the anthropological element, showing casual encounters and official ceremonies. In this case, we see a religious procession ascending the steps of a church. In the foreground, a cardinal is accompanied by two tricorn-wearing guards and another ecclesiastical figure. Behind them, a majestic carriage awaits them. The painstaking attention paid to the details of the clothing, the equestrian statues, etc., is outstanding, but also in the capture of the whole, with its vividly festive atmosphere. Tusquets began his studies with Ramón Moliné, and at the same time published some of his caricatures in "El tros de paper", signed under the pseudonym Patufet. He then travelled to Italy on his own, where he would live for the rest of his life. After a year's stay in Rome, where he studied at the Academia Chigi and joined the circle of Catalan painters based there, he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid (1867), where he was awarded a third-class medal. There they became acquainted with the latest trends of the Portici group and, in particular, became interested in the work of Domenico Morelli. At this time Tusquets was painting landscapes of Naples and Amalfi, and specialised in compositions of rural landscapes with figures dressed in traditional costumes. On Fortuny's death he reproduced his funeral in an impressive painting, in which the influence of the "macchiaioli" can be seen. In 1875 he exhibited several paintings at the International Circle in Rome and was highly praised by Italian critics. In 1877 he was awarded the diploma of honour, the only one reserved for foreigners, at the Naples Exhibition, and the Italian government acquired his work. During these years his works were exhibited in numerous European cities, winning prizes at the Universal Exhibitions in Vienna (1876) and Paris (1878). In 1880 he exhibited for the first time at the Sala Parés in Barcelona. Having settled permanently in Rome, Tusquets was appointed president of the city's International Artistic Circle. With his works of the 1880s he established himself in the official historicist genre, so far removed from the simple compositions of his earlier periods. During his last years he painted a wide range of themes, depicting orientalist scenes as well as scenes of customs and historicism. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museum of Montserrat and the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

Measurements: 73 x 98 cm; 116 x 138 cm. (frame). The painter Ramón Tusquets describes in this composition, rich in anecdotes, the arrival of a carriage to a village, in front of whose medieval walls with crenellated towers the members of a family are alighting. Under a luminous sky, the midday sun shapes each of the figures gathered in front of what looks like the town hall, with its stately façade of ancient ashlars. Almsmen seated on the cobblestones, travellers and country folk enliven the scene. Tusquets began his studies with Ramón Moliné, and at the same time published some of his caricatures in "El tros de paper", signed under the pseudonym Patufet. RAMÓN TUSQUETS I MAIGNON (Barcelona, 1837 - Rome, 1904). "Landscape with Ruins. Rome, ca.1870. Oil on canvas. Signed and located in the lower right corner. Size: 110 x 80 cm; 130 x 100 cm. (frame). The romantic theme of the ancient ruins is taken up here by Tusquets but with a realistic slant, as he was a painter especially interested in genre painting, in capturing humble people. This painting was executed during his long stay in Rome. He frequently went out into the Roman countryside and was fascinated by the numerous remains he found there. In this composition, the sublimity of the ruins, dotted with tall fluted columns crowned with moss, harmonises with the vivid portrait of families of shepherds and peasants, who are not minimised by the landscape but ennobled by it. Tusquets began his studies with Ramón Moliné, and at the same time published some of his caricatures in "El tros de paper", signed under the pseudonym Patufet. Camuccini & Minardi to Mancini & Balla, Shepherd Gallery, New York, April 1976. Modernists and traditionalists will find works to covet within this catalogue. And, without a doubt, this auction presents a singular opportunity for enthusiasts of 19th-century European academic paintings and drawings. The sale boasts a rich array of masterful oils on canvas and panel in beautiful condition by celebrated Italian, French, Belgian, German, Polish, Danish and Spanish painters. Some of them, such as Cesare Detti's monumental Venetian spectacle, Henri III reçu par le doge Muccinigo au palais Foscari, with its cast of 60 figures, earned inaugural exposure to the public at the Paris Salons. One work in the sale, a jewel-like panel of a scullery maid peeling apples by Belgian genre specialist, Charles van Meer, was formerly in the personal collection of Queen Victoria of England and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Collectors will note that our Spring sale contains an attractive selection of 19th-century academic drawings from the estate of Neal Glass and Kerry Betensky. These sheets originate from an immense corpus of over 12,000 drawings assembled into a series of albums in the later 19th century by Giovanni Piancastelli (1845-1926), a painter as well as then-Director of the Galleria Borghese in Rome. During Piancastelli's period of activity, collecting drawings on this scale was not uncommon, particularly for a figure with close ties to an artistic community such as he had. It is notable that the current selection of drawings were contemporary works of art when Piancastelli acquired them. Many of the artists represented were figures Piancastelli knew personally, and who held teaching positions at the Academy of San Luca in Rome. While the fate of Piancastelli's entire drawing collection is unknown, the first batch purchased from it en bloc was sold in 1901 to the American Hewitt sisters, Sarah and Eleanor, who were forming a museum in New York City. Their 3,500 Piancastelli drawings remain in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. The Glass/Betensky drawings in the current catalogue share the above provenance, literature and exhibition history, unless otherwise noted in our online catalogue. Please note that the cataloguing for these sheets follows the extensive research and connoisseurship undertaken by the Shepherd Gallery, New York, as published in the catalogue to its 1976 exhibition Italian 19th Century Drawings and Watercolors: An Album. Camuccini & Minardi to Mancini & Balla. HID01801242017
