(19)82 Zum Künstler: Selim Turan begann 1915 sein Studium an der Istanbuler Akademie der Schönen Künste, der heutigen Mimar Sinan-Universität. Seine Lehrer waren Nazmi Ziya Güran, Feyhaman Duran, Leopold Levy und Zeki Kocamemi. 1938 schloss er sein Studium ab. Mit einem Stipendium der französischen Regierung ging er 1947 nach Paris. SELIM TURAN Untitled. Gouache on paper, circa 1960. 210x157 mm; 8¼x6¼ inches. Signed in pencil, lower right recto. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago. Turan (1915-1994) was born in Istanbul and trained at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts during the mid-1930s. Léopold Lévy, who was made head of the Fine Arts department at the Academy during Turan's studies, became a significant influence on the young artist, bringing a more liberal approach and experimentation with color, form and composition that blended both Western and Eastern cultures. In 1947 he and his wife, the ceramic artist Fatma Sahika Arutay, went to Paris, financed by a scholarship awarded by the French government (Boursiers du Government Français). During his early years in Paris, like others of his generation, he was influenced by abstract art and became one of the Turkish artists who embarked on a critical change of direction as a result of their experiences in that city. Turan's abstract paintings were first shown in Paris in 1948 at a group exhibition called "La Rose des Vents" held at the Galerie des Deux-Iles, and his first solo exhibition was held at Galerie Breteau, one of the leading galleries of the time. During the 1960s, Turan pivoted in style from abstraction toward more figurative works, and from the late 1970s onward, at the invitation of then Turkish President Fahri Korutürk, he spent the last part of his life producing a series of works that reflect his interest in Turkish folkloric themes. Turan is among the most important Turkish abstract artists of the 20th century.

Ohne Titel Öl auf engmaschiger Leinwand. Um 1960. 72 x 50 cm. Unten rechts mit Pinsel in Schwarz signiert "Selim", verso nochmals mit Kreide in Rot signiert "Selim", bezeichnet "5 Av du Maine P. XV" und mit Richtungspfeil. Der Maler und Bildhauer Selim Turan nahm bereits in jungen Jahren Zeichenstunden. 1915 schließlich erlaubte ihm der Vater, Malerei an der Istanbul Fine Arts Academy, heute die Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, zu studieren. 1941 war er Gründungsmitglied der Yeniler-Gruppe, die unter der Beteiligung von Abidin Dino das Ziel von sozialer Realität in der Malerei verfolgte. 1947 erhielt Turan ein Reisestipendium nach Paris von der französischen Regierung. In der Metropole an der Seine konnte er seine Malerei weiterentwickeln und wandte sich der abstrakten Malerei zu. The dimensions are 55 x 46 cm, while the frame measures 58 x 49 cm. Selim Turan (1915-1994) Selim Turan was born in Istanbul and studied at the local art school. Afterwards, he settled in Europe. In 1947, a scholarship brought him to Paris. Turan attended first the Académie Ranson. Afterwards, he taught at the École d'Art de Fontainebleau, as well as at the Académie Goetz. After World War II, he focused on sculpture and took a major role in the avant-garde movement of the Nouvelle École de Paris: as well as in the second half of the 19th century, many Turkish artists came to Paris in the first half of the 20th century, creating mainly abstract compositions. The current highest auction record for a similar composition is more than €14,000 The ‘Nouvelle École de Paris’ (Second School of Paris) was a group of painters who dedicated themselves especially to abstract painting after the Second World War until circa 1960. The movement included such famous artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hartung, Serge Poliakoff and the artists of CoBrA. Numerous works of this movement feature elements of Lyrical Abstraction and Tachism.
