Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Animal painter, Bird painter, Water color painter, Illustrator, Wood cutter, b. 1901 - d. 1979

Born in 1901, in Cheshire, England, artist Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe lived, worked, and practiced drawing on his family farm until, at age 19, he received a scholarship from London's Royal College of Art. In addition to his academic paintings, Charles Tunnicliffe made and sold etchings to supplement his grant. Upon graduation, the Royal College of Art awarded Tunnicliffe with another scholarship to study at its etching and engraving school where he earned a diploma in 1923.

After years of working as a commercial artist, Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe illustrated a children's book about an otter; the success of which propelled him to widespread appeal. Charles Tunnicliffe's artwork for sale included paintings in calendars, cards, and other children's books, though most remember him for his animal illustrations. Indeed, a friend of Tunnicliffe remarked that the "whole of nature absorbed him." You can find your future collectible animal paintings for sale at Invaluable.

Forshaw (lower right)24 x 25cm (9¼ x 9¾ in.)Tunnicliffe moved to Anglesey in 1947, it was at this point that he met chairman and president of Burtonwood Brewery Company and keen ornithologist Thomas Forshaw. The pair's friendship blossomed with shared interests in a love of ale and ornithology and Forshaw decided to commission Tunnicliffe to his collection of Fancy Pigeons. At one point, Forshaw held 400 birds in his aviary, an avid pigeon fancier. Tunnicliffe produced three large folios of drawings, the majority of illustrations made direct from life. Two of these folios are now held in the Tunnicliffe Museum, Anglesey and it is most likely that this present work was taken from the third folio.

L. Dalton in 2010. The three calendars commemorated by these albums appear to have been conceived in part to showcase the firm's reprographic technology, the introduction to the Tunnicliffe album explaining that: ‘This attractive production forms an example of the satisfying result which can be obtained when a discriminating man of business commissions at artist of repute to help him. Having agreed to break away from photographic reproductions it was decided by Mr J. Holland Goddard, the governing director of the firm, after discussion with Mr H. Beeston, publicity manager, to commission an artist of front rank to make four drawings of subjects which would bear some reference to “wood”: wood denotes the countryside so the choice of Mr C. F. Tunnicliffe was inevitable as the wide range of his accomplishment in that sphere was acknowledged’.
