Henry Scott Tuke Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1858 - d. 1929

Born in York in 1858, British artist Henry Scott Tuke belonged to the group of artists known as the Newlyn School, who depicted scenes from the Cornish fishing village of the same name. Tuke studied at the Slade School of Art in London, and went on to travel Europe on a scholarship. During this time his work was influenced by artists like Arthur Lemon and Jules Bastien-Lepage. An avid sailor, painter Henry Scott Tuke eventually purchased a boat that would become his studio, and began focusing his attention on outdoor scenes in Newlyn. Many of Henry Scott Tuke maritime paintings for sale portray bathers, usually nude children and young men, and picturesque landscapes of beaches and country life. While artist Tuke's nude paintings shocked his audience at first, his work eventually gained notoriety. Enliven your home by selecting collectible maritime and marine paintings at auction.

HENRY SCOTT TUKE (BRITISH 1858-1929) Venice Harbor View, circa 1899 oil on canvas 61 x 92 cm (24 x 36 1/4 in.); framed dimensions: 78 x 109 cm (30 3/4 x 42 7/8 in.) initialed lower right; signed on verso LOT NOTES Born in York, England, in 1858, Henry Scott Tuke was a prominent English painter and photographer. He got most known for his impressionist costal scenes that often feature groups of young nude men engaged in leisurely activities, such as swimming, boating, and sunbathing. His ability to convey the play of light on water, harmonious and tranquil atmosphere as well as the beauty of human form with a sensitivity that transcends mere eroticism in an era where conservative Victorian values dominated the art scene, gained Tuke the reputation of a revolutionary master. Tuke trained at the Slade School of Art, London and later in the studio of Jean Paul Laurens, Paris. Arriving in Paris in 1881, Tuke met Oscar Wilde, John Singer Sargent and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Later in life, Tuke became associated with the Newlyn School, a group of artists based in the Cornish fishing village of Newlyn. The Newlyn School, characterized by its commitment to naturalism and plein air painting, provided Tuke with a rich source of inspiration, particularly in the vibrant coastal environment that surrounded him. He settled in Falmouth, England that remained Tuke’s residence until the end of his life for 45 years later. Stylistically Tuke presents a fusion of impressionism, plein airisme and academism. His use of a bright and luminous palette, combined with a keen understanding of how light interacts with various surfaces, contributed to the ethereal quality of his works. Tuke's paintings exuded a warmth and vibrancy that brought his maritime and figurative subjects to life. During his lifetime Tuke travelled to Italy several times. In Venice, he shifted his focus from the open sea to the labyrinthine canals, ancient bridges, and intricate architecture. The presented work depicts Venice historic harbour. The work skillfully captures the glow of Venetian sunlight and luminosity that highlights the architectural grandeur and the rhythmic movement of the water. A similar painting depicts a harbor in Genoa, where Tuke traveled in 1913 is recorded in the artist register of paintings (page 28). Tuke's ability to seamlessly transition from one subject matter to another demonstrated his mastery of composition and artistic vision. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work is in good condition, overall scattered craquelure, small losses left center. UV light inspection showed medium varnish, no signs of retouching. N.B. Tuke / Paris / 1882’ (en haut à droite) ; dédicacé ‘my friend Haumont [probablement Emile Richard Haumont]’ (en haut à gauche) 21,3 x 17,1 cm Oil on canvas laid down on panel Stamp of the supplier on reverse Signed, dated and located upper right Dedicated upper left 8.3 x 6.7 in.
