        Est: -

Wire Tuazon (b. 1973) - Painting for Damien

Wire Tuazon (b. 1973) Painting for Damien signed and dated 2005 (verso) oil on canvas The written word and art have long held the same degree of importance in the formation and development of meaning. Whether it be social, cultural, religious, or economical, language and aesthetics often play a key role on how we communicate and understand certain concepts. But rarely do we see text and art intermeshed in the same piece or work. Wire Tuazon’s signature style attempts to synthesize these two concepts into a coherent whole. By combining the semiotic quality of the written word with the immediate aesthetic effect of his meticulously rendered image, Tuazon effectively imbues his piece with a memetic characteristic that reflects our contemporary disposition. Tuazon’s art is the kind that immediately makes itself known no matter the setting. Its bold and vibrant treatments are both alluring and engaging. In this particular piece entitled Painting for Damien, Tuazon references the works of acclaimed contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Tuazon particularly utilizes Hirst’s seminal Natural History series in order to build upon Hirst’s groundbreaking existential musings on life and temporality. Estimate in USD $2400-$3120

WIRE ROMMEL G. TUAZON (b. 1973) IN DEFIANCE OF PAINTING (QUADROPHENIA), 2007, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM2,000 - RM4,000

Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by the British rock band The Who and which was entirely composed by Pete Townshend. It follows the self-quest of a disturbed young mod Jimmy. The reference is suggested in the word being emblazoned over the image of two figures looking over a blank canvas and one daubing the first touch on it. Wire Tuazon works on a bandwidth between the hyperrealist and the performative with recourse to semiotics. He graduated from the Fine Arts Univeristy of the Philippines in 1999, majoring in Painting, and in 2003 was one of 13 young artists awarded by the Cultural Centre of the Philippines. He has an independently run space in Angono and later in Quezon city. He is married to Keiye Miranda, the artist-daughter of famous Angono folk painter and sculptor Nemiranda. He is also the founding member of the art collective, Surrounded by Water, which was active from 1998 to 2004.

WIRE ROMMEL G. TUAZON (b. 1973) SPIRITUAL PILGRIMAGE AND THE ROMANCE OF SURVIVAL (MAN OF SORROWS) AFTER BAS JAN ARDER, 2014, Oil on canvas panel pierced with arrow

        Est: RM3,000 - RM5,000

Wire Tuazon revisited the bizarre disappearance in the North Indian Ocean of Dutch Conceptual-performance artist Bastiaan Johan Christiaan ‘Bas Jan’ Ader (1942-1975) as a reverse tribute in this work with his portrait emblazoned over the whole canvas and the shadow of his small sailing craft, Guppy 13, cast over it. Some speculated that his last act, In Search of the Miraculous, was a staged suicide and not a sailing misadventure. The ‘Man of Sorrow’ epithet refers to another work of his with the message to friends, ‘I’m Too Sad To Tell You.’ Notice the arrow rending the work.

        Est: RM1,000 - RM2,000

Wire Tuazon’s paintings depict a manufactured reality with iconic scenes sourced from mass media, books and the internet. Like Sleeping with Pythons presents a human skull rendered from the side view. The momento mori, a symbolic reminder of mortality is painted delicately devoid of brush strokes in a subdued palette, which emulates the effect of a mass reproduced image. The hyperrealist anatomy of the skull is described carefully, suggesting the pits, ridges and arches. The skull silently enters into the shadows casted on the right, which creates depth and expressiveness. The image is labeled “Treason” in his trademark text, utilizing the Helvetica font. The playful juxtaposition of text and image compels the viewer to rethink clichés of the familiar and to reflect upon the search for meaning and empty significations behind the treachery of images.   Wire Tuazon graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting at the University of Phillipines in 1999, and became a founding member of the art collective Surrounded by Water. WIRE ROMMEL G. TUAZON (b. 1973), Beyond Another Image, 2006, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM5,000 - RM7,000

Wire Tuazon is one of Philippines most accomplished contemporary artists who seeks inspiration from pictures and texts, is featured at HBArt auction for the first time. Images are not merely visual cues but powerful signifiers that implicate history itself while his trademark text transcends its linguistic properties to become, inevitably, an image, generative of associations as well as collisions. Patrick D. Flores, curator, writer and an academician has described accurately on the practice of Wire Tuazon in an article titled Hunting and Gathering: "Wire Tuazon has always been drawn to the found image as a basis for the condition in which an imagination of reality plays out. The found image is an index of the activity of reading, and therefore implicates the labor and the desire to figure and to figure out. When he overlays words or phrases on this found image, another layer of labor and desire emerges, this time partaking of the work of language, or more to the point, of text. The artist disrupts the notion of language as merely referential. He argues that writing is formative and that it shapes knowledge in the context of, again, figuring and figuring out. Text and image, therefore generate painting. The latter is not only an optical apprehension; it is also not just pigment on ground. Painting is procedure." Beyond Another Image austerely illustrates an outline of an avatar symbolising the human head with the title as text. The ambiguity leaves the viewer to imagine a familiar face in place of the unknown. Wire Tuazon is a visual artist whose practice combines the hyperrealist, semiotic, and the performative. Graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1999, he became a founding member of the art collective Surrounded By Water, which set up independent artist-run spaces in Angono and later on in Manila in 2000.
