Auf einer Reise nach Den Haag im Jahr 1846 begegnete Troyon den Werken zahlreicher niederländischer Altmeister, von denen insbesondere der Landschafts- und Tiermaler Paulus Potter (1625–1654) nachhaltigen Eindruck auf Troyon hinterliess. Der Einfluss der Malerei Potters bei Troyon wird im vorliegenden Gemälde, welches bereits im 19. Jahrhundert als ein herausragendes Chef-d’Œuvre des Franzosen galt, gut sichtbar. Bemerkenswert ist zudem die exzellente Provenienz des Werkes, das Eingang in einige der berühmtesten Kunstsammlungen des 19. Jahrhunderts fand. Beispielsweise gehörte das Bild in den 1860er-Jahren dem in Paris lebenden osmanischen Diplomaten und Kunstsammler Halil Şerif Pascha (1831–1879), der auch als Khalil-Bey bekannt war. In dessen Gemäldesammlung befanden sich neben diesem Hauptwerk Troyons auch weitere Ausnahmewerke, wie “L’origine du monde” von Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) und “Le Bain turc” von Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867). Troyons "Animaux à l'ombre au bord d'une mare" besticht durch diese illustre Provenienz, überzeugt gleichzeitig durch seine hohe malerische Qualität und stellt nicht zuletzt deshalb ein Paradebeispiel einer Paysage intime der Schule von Barbizon dar. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet. (Sèvres 1810–1865 Paris) Young Shepherds with Their Cattle, signed C. Troyon, oil on canvas, 70.5 x 64.5 cm, framed (frame damaged) Constant Troyon was born in 1810 in Sèvres near Paris. He was a landscape and animal painter who worked as a porcelain painter as a young man alongside his father in the famous local pottery. At the age of 21 he became an itinerant landscape painter and was taken on as a pupil by the French painter and lithographer Camille Roqueplan. He was then introduced to Théodore Rousseau and other painters of the Barbizon school, who were the first open-air painters to seek new forms of expression and had significant influence on the development of 19th century European landscape painting. Constant Troyon became a masterful painter of animals, which soon brought him international success. He influenced German animal painters such as Anton Braith and Christian Mali through the graphic reproductions of his works.
