        Est: $3,500 - $4,500

PERCIVAL (PERCY) ALBERT TROMPF (1902-1964) WORLD'S GREATEST AIR RACE / ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA. 1934. 40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Moore Young Litho. Co., [Melbourne]. Condition B+: repaired tears and small replaced losses at edges, some slightly into image and text; slight darkening at edges; restoration along abrasions in image; replaced punch holes at top. One of the features of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Melbourne was the "World's Greatest Air Race," a competition of flyers traveling from Mildenhall in England to Melbourne. The competition was sponsored by Sir Macpherson Robertson, a confectionary mogul and philanthropist, who put up a £15,000 prize pool. The State Library of New South Wales explains, "The route stretched over nineteen countries and seven seas. Five compulsory stops were designated for both divisions. Between the five stops (Baghdad, Allahabad, Singapore, Darwin and Charleville) pilots could select their own route . . . Initially, there were 64 entrants from 13 countries, but when the race started on 20 October 1934, the field had been reduced to 20 planes from seven countries. Only 11 finished the grueling 18,000 kilometre trip" (https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/stories/aviation-australia/macrobertson-centenary-air-race#:~:text=A%20spectacular%20flying%20race%20was,aircraft%20size%2C%20power%20or%20crew). Trompf, one of Australia's preeminent poster artists, began his artistic career designing chocolate boxes and candy wrappers for a Melbourne confectioner (ironically, perhaps, not one of Robertson's companies). He soon opened his own studio and went on to design hundreds of travel posters. Monash 15.

ARTIST: PERCY TROMPF (1902-1964) SIZE: 24 7/8 x 39 1/2 in./63.2 x 100.3 cm PRINTER: Moore-Young Litho., Melbourne DESCRIPTION: Many geographic aspects pop to mind when one hears mention of Australia, such as the Great Barrier Reef, but rain forests aren’t necessarily one of them, most likely due to the equatorial nature of this region. And yet, some of the most breathtaking rain forests in the world are located in tropical North Queensland, stretching from Townsville to Cooktown. Trompf puts a very civilized veneer on all of this spectacular scenery and rugged topography, making the entire affair out to be a rather pleasant walk in a very exotic park. Trompf studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School before relocating to Melbourne in 1923, where he established his reputation as a freelance artist specializing in posters before opening his own design studio. The Australian landscape and wildlife directly influenced his output. By the 1930s, Trompf's brightly colored posters were well known in Australia and his work had attracted attention in both Britain and North America. (Modern; Travel)

ARTIST: PERCY TROMPF (1902-1964) SIZE: 25 x 40 1/8 in./63.5 x 102 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: In terms of his work for the Australian National Travel Association, Trompf was something of their arboreal go-to guy—for example, his poster for North Queensland (see PAI-XXXVII, 534) is a lush rain forest tapestry. Here, in a promotion for Marysville, Victoria, he focuses on the “Tallest Trees in the British Empire”—the old growth Beech forests in the upper Taggerty catchment. Marysville—whose population hovers around a total of 500 residents—relies heavily on tourism for its economic prosperity and employment. Trompf studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School before relocating to Melbourne in 1923, where he established his reputation as a freelance artist specializing in posters before opening his own design studio. The Australian landscape and wildlife directly influenced his output. Artist: PERCY TROMPF (1902-1964) Size: 24 7/8 x 39 3/4 in./63.3 x 101 cm Troedel & Cooper, Melbourne In 1936, Shirley Temple was the best-paid actress in Hollywood, so perhaps that was the flash of inspiration that made Percy Trompf turn the Tinseltown flashbulbs on this child of the Outback. Trompf became the most famous poster artist for Australian tourism, delivering bright and cheerful images like these during the depths of the Depression, so that celebratory bouquet the girl is holding ought, rightly, to belong to him – and you too. *Provenance: Gail Chisholm Estate, NYC. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins; restoration along creases in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Australia's Mt. Buffalo National Park was established in 1898, in Victoria, northeast of Melbourne. The Mt. Buffalo Chalet, nicknamed "The Grand Old Lady," was built in 1910, and from that moment on, the area became not only a destination for skiers and hikers, but for travelers seeking an elegant elevated retreat as well. At an altitude of 1337 meters (4386 feet), the complex's clifftop location gave eager sightseers panoramic views of the alpine valley below. Here, Trompf depicts the Chalet in its heyday below the image of a well-dressed vacationer illuminated by the setting sun as he takes in the expansive scenery below.

Artist: PERCY TROMPF (1902-1964) Size: 24 7/8 x 39 5/8 in./63 x 100.6 cm F.W. Niven In the 18th century, more British sailors died from disease than from enemy action, and scurvy was the foremost scourge of the mariner. That's why, in 1787, the English First Fleet was ordered to plant citrus groves in Australia. As it turned out, the Australian climate was ideal for oranges and mandarins; in this sunny portrait of agriculture, the Aussie picker's fruits seem to best even the Floridian's juiciest efforts and "glowing health" is readily apparent throughout. Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Artist: PERCY TROMPF (1902-1964) Size: 25 x 39 7/8 in./63.7 x 101.3 cm In terms of his work for the Australian National Travel Association, Trompf was something of their arboreal go-to guy–for example, his poster for destination North Queensland (see PAI-XXXVII, 534) is a lush rain forest tapestry. Here, in a promotion for Marysville, Victoria, he focuses on the "Tallest Trees in the British Empire" –the old growth Beech forests in the upper Taggerty catchment. Marysville – whose population hovers around a total of 500 residents – relies heavily on tourism for its economic prosperity and employment. Trompf studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School before relocating to Melbourne in 1923, where he established his reputation as a freelance artist specializing in posters before opening his own design studio. The Australian landscape and wildlife directly influenced his output. By the 1930s, Trompf's brightly-colored posters were well known in Australia and his work had attracted attention in both Britain and North America. (Australia, Horse)

PERCIVAL ALBERT (PERCY) TROMPF (1902-1964) PRINCE'S HIGHWAY TOUR / MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY. 19 3/4x25 inches, 50x63 1/2 cm. Robt. Harding Pty. Ltd., Melbourne. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and minor overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. The Princes Highway opened in 1920 and runs from Sydney to Port Augusta, rounding the southern coast of Australia to pass through Melbourne. While it would be not the most direct route to get from one end of the continent to the other, Trompf's poster shows why this indirect route was traveled - for its more rural and scenic vistas of the coastline. This road was named 'Princes Highway' to commemorate the Prince of Wales' (later King Edward VIII) visit to Australia. The intent was for him to make an overland trip from Melbourne to Sydney using this route, but ultimately this plan was abandoned because the road would not have been constructed to his standards in time. Trompf created this poster for the Government Tourist Bureau, advertising the ease of travel between these same cities - either by driving along the advertised coastal route or taking a train for a more direct trip.
