Artist Vladimir Tretchikoff,born in Russia, began his artistic career in advertising and graphic magazine work after moving to China. A self-taught painter, he eventually committed himself to that medium toward the end of WWII. He began exhibiting in 1946, a few years after moving to South Africa. Most of artist Vladimir Tretchikoff's paintings are detailed portraits of women or still life images. Many of his fans compare Vladimir Tretchikoff paintings to the work of icon Andy Warhol, as Tretchikoff's artwork also includes bold lines and vivid pops of color.

His 1952 painting Chinese Girl, with its subject's unique skin coloring, is regarded as one of the most reproduced artworks in the world; the original is held in a private collection in South Africa.     VLADIMIR TRETCHIKOFF [Russia/South Africa] 1913-2006 "Springboks V Wales" a rare large oil on canvas, signed lower left, 64x132cms, original frame. Condition fine. Provenance: purchased directly from the 1972 Artist's Exhibition at Rackhams Dept. Store [part of the Harrod's Group], Birmingham UK.Then by descent to current owner. FREE SHIPPINF WORLDWIDE. Notes: From 1950, Tretchikoff began to experiment with capturing motion on canvas.Over the next decade, he painted a number of 'action studies' figures playing Rugby, Ice Hockey, Soccer & Horse Racing. Tretchikoff’s first British show had taken place at Harrods, with an attendance of 205 000. In the early 1970s, he was preparing for his second exhibition, to be held at Rackhams, the Harrods group’s department store in Birmingham. Harry Dare, a Birmingham building contractor with business interests in South Africa, visited the artist at his studio in Cape Town. Dare, the owner of two Tretchikoff canvases, recounted: ‘He was doing a rugby painting, and I said to him, ‘It’s no good, that. If you’re coming to Birmingham, you’ll have to have a round ball.’ ‘What do you mean?’ Tretchi says to me. ‘Soccer’, I said. Three weeks later, he started it and here it is.’ Football was one of the highest-priced works among the forty that Tretchikoff took to Birmingham in 1972. ABOUT THE ARTWORK This painting by Vladimir Tretchikoff masterfully contrasts textures, drawing the viewer's attention to the interplay between the various surfaces depicted. The silkiness of the cloth, with its gold and black stripes, cascades across the canvas, capturing light in a way that emphasises its luxurious texture. The softness of each fold and ripple contrasts sharply with the whimsical background, painted with broad, liberal strokes. In 2011, a major retrospective exhibition, Tretchikoff: The People’s Painter, curated by Andrew Lamprecht was held at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town. A book, Tretchikoff: The People’s Painter, was published to accompany the exhibition. Edited by Lamprecht it included essays by Boris Gorelik, Yvonne du Toit, Melvyn Minaar and Ashraf Jamal.
