Charles Warde Traver (1870-1945), Portrait of a Lady, c. 1895

      Est: €1,280 - €1,600

Oil on canvas USA, circa 1895 Charles Warde Traver (1870-1945) - American painter and illustrator, who specialized in romantic portraits of women Signed lower left 'C. Worde Traver', verso signed again and inscribed '15 W 67' Broad ornamented golden frame Overall dimensions framed: 81 x 60 cm Good condition Opulent representation of a young lady in front of a flourishing cherry tree with correspondingly colors in her robe and hat This charming depiction of a young woman under a blooming cherry tree was created by the American painter and illustrator Charles Warde Traver around 1895. It is a characteristic motif by Traver, who specialized in the representation of romantic portraits of women during the course of his training. Traver also created numerous cover illustrations. The lettering in the upper area of our painting, only faintly recognizable, indicates that this image might also be related to an illustration. In the 1890s, Traver studied in Munich, where he may have been inspired by the many notable illustrators who used to work for popular magazines such as 'Jugend', 'Fliegende Blätter' or 'Simplicissimus' at the time. The painting is signed lower left 'C. Warde Traver' and is in good condition with slight, age-related craquelure. There is a skillfully repaired tear at the upper right, which is not visible though. Overall, the painting makes a very good impression. The stretcher measures 65 x 45.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 81 x 60 cm. Charles Warde Traver (1870-1945) Charles Warde Traver was born 1870 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. He attended the Detroit School of Art and then went to the Chicago Art Institute. A promoter of his work enabled him in the year of 1894 to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. After his return to America he settled in New York City, where he focused on his work as an illustrator and worked for national magazines such as 'Good Housekeeping', 'Pictorial Review' or 'McCall's Magazine'. In addition to that, Traver worked for newspapers such as 'The Saturday Evening Post' as well as 'The New York Times'.
