                Apr. 18, 2024

                PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (1852-1936)

                Est: £6,000 - £8,000

PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (1852-1936) 'SEEK YE MY FACE' ENAMEL TRIPTYCH, DATED 1906 enamel with foil on copper, within a patinated copper frame and stand, probably designed by Ramsay Traquair (1874-1952) and made by J.M Talbot, inscribed in gilt to the front in the enamel SEEK YE MY FACE/ THY FACE LORD WILL I SEEK, signed twice with artist's monogram and dated 190*, inscribed verso in the copper I WILL LAY ME DOWN/ IN PEACE, AND TAKE/ MY REST, FOR IT IS THOU,/ LORD, ONLY, THAT MAKEST/ ME TO DWELL IN SAFETY with artist's monogram and date, 1906 overall height 16.8cm, central enamel panel 3.5cm x 5.3cm, side panels 3.5cm x 2.4cm Literature: Cumming E. Phoebe Anna Traquair 1852-1936, 1993, p.81, no.96 and p.36, no.89, illus.Note: Phoebe Anna Traquair (1873-1936) was an Edinburgh-based artist who was an important member Arts and Crafts Movement. She was one of few late Victorian women who managed to balance her traditional family responsibilities with a successful, internationally recognised artistic career. This is emphasised in the fact that she was the first woman to be given honorary membership of the Scottish Royal Academy, in 1920. Her specialities included mural painting, manuscript illumination and enamelling. This devotional triptych is almost identical to one in the collection of the V&A; Museum (V&A; M.189-1976). It is thought Traquair made four versions of this triptych, two of which were originally owned by the Carmichael family. The enamelled scenes represent 'Love, Comforter of the Night', flanked by 'Evening' and 'Morning', all of which Traquair also produced as single enamels set as pendants. The reverse of the central panel has an engraved message taken from the Bible: 'I will lay me down in peace and take my rest for it is thou, Lord, only, that makest me to dwell in safety' (Psalm 4:8). The exterior surface of the side-panels is also enamelled and shows a quotation from Psalm 27:8, 'Seek ye my face; They Face Lord will I seek'. The triptych is dated 1906, when Traquair was at the height of her enamelling career. It is estimated that she produced around 150 enamels over the course of her career, with at least 80 made between 1901 and 1906. She was particularly attracted to enamel work because of the bright colours that it created, which she further heightened through the use of metal foil fragments. The form, subject and style of this triptych are entirely typical of Traquair's work. They reflect her belief in the moralising purpose of art and her love of Italian Renaissance artists such as Fra Angelico. The central panel's red flowers against a green ground and the rainbow sky, indicating dawn or dusk, are features repeatedly used by Traquair and can be seen on another of her triptychs The Red Cross Knight, of which there are two known versions. The copper mount for the present example, like her others, would have been designed by her son, Ramsay, based on Renaissance metalwork forms that they researched together.

Y PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (SCOTTISH 1852-1936) FAN, 'THE ISLAND OF THE FAY'

                Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Y PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (SCOTTISH 1852-1936) FAN, 'THE ISLAND OF THE FAY' watercolour on silk and with ivory sticks, capped with silvered metal, inscribed, signed and dated THE ISLAND OF THE FAY/ PHOEBE A. TRAQUAIR/ 1889, set within card box (32.5cm x 60cm (open)) Footnote: Note: In the late 1880s the Irish-born Phoebe Anna Traquair was involved in a range of crafts in addition to painting her second Edinburgh mural cycle at the Song School, St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral (1888-92). In addition, she was working on embroideries and beginning to engage in both commercial book illustration and finely illuminating modern British poetry, notably Alfred Lord Tennyson’s In Memoriam. Among her more everyday domestic crafts was fan painting. She first practised it at home in Dublin, winning a medal at the age of fourteen. A few years later, as a student attending the Royal Dublin Society’s art school, a second fan was awarded a Queen’s Medal in the school’s submission to South Kensington’s National Competition. Two later fans are known. The first, dated 1888, was likely made for her personal use as it subsequently passed to her daughter and granddaughter and thence to the V&A in the mid-1970s. Given the title The Sleeping Beauty, it was painted with a scene of a sleeping girl watched by Cupid. Traquair painted this fan the following year. Its subject, The Land of the Fay, was taken from Celtic lore, and gave her the opportunity to explore non-classical imagery. A boat is being steered to Tir Na Nog, the ‘land of the young’. The waters are peopled by mermaids and fish. In design it is unique, although in 1905 she would enamel a stunning mermaid necklace (also in the V&A), and her delight in patterning the swirling waters would soon find reinterpretation in The Souls of the Blest, the second panel (1889-91) of her embroidered draught screen The Salvation of Mankind (c.1886-93 (Edinburgh Museums and Galleries, City Art Centre), and later in her ceiling decoration The Six Days of Creation (1896) in the South Chapel of the Mansfield Place Church (Mansfield Traquair Centre). PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (1852-1936) 'THE DREAM', ARTS & CRAFTS BROOCH, CIRCA 1909

                Est: £3,000 - £5,000

PHOEBE ANNA TRAQUAIR (1852-1936) 'THE DREAM', ARTS & CRAFTS BROOCH, CIRCA 1909 enamel with foil in copper, within white metal mount (5cm across) Footnote: Literature: Cumming, E. Phoebe Anna Traquair 1852-1936 National Galleries of Scotland 1993, p. 85, no. 121, p. 82, no 101 Note: Traquair learned the craft of art enamelling from her friend Lady Carmichael in 1901, and over the coming decade her enamels would be set either as jewellery (notably pendants and necklaces) or ‘architectural’ formats such as triptychs in stands often designed by her architect son Ramsay. They were exhibited both in Scotland and in London with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Her fine enamels soon became the craft for which she was best known south of the Border, with The Studio critic commenting in 1906 that ‘the qualities which are attained in enamel by a worker with a sensitivity to colour make it peculiarly a medium which satisfies an artistic nature ... that enamelling is Mrs Traquair’s medium we do not doubt’. Her subjects, painted on copper or more occasionally silver or gold, were taken from classical or religious subjects, the latter often popularised as angels comforting or watching over female figures. A pendant, necklace or the occasional brooch, set to her design by John Maitland Talbot, Hamilton & Inches, Brook & Sons or (after 1909) Henry Tatton would sell for two or three guineas. Traquair the artist always gave her craft pieces titles, and The Dream copies the central plaque of a 1906 necklace of the same name. Enamels that were admired or which she herself found particularly satisfying were duplicated, with a number remaining unset in her studio. One such unmounted piece is The Dream, given to the V&A by her granddaughter and dated 1909. The enamel is from the same date: the setting may be by Brook. The dream concept was one that greatly appealed to her, and was introduced to her Mansfield Place Church mural where Joseph’s dream is central to the Old Testament narrative on the nave’s south wall (1900). A dream image was also present on the Lorimer piano painted for Frank Tennant as part of her illustrations of The Song of Solomon (National Museums Scotland).
