b. 1881 - d. 1967

Jessie Constance Alicia Traill (29 July 1881 – 15 May 1967) was an Australian print maker. Trained by Frederick McCubbin at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, and by painter and printmaker Frank Brangwyn in London, Traill worked in England and France in the period immediately preceding World War I. During the war she served in hospitals with the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Traill is best known for a series of prints created in the early 1930s depicting the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Critic and art historian Sasha Grishin describes her as "one of the great Australian artists of the 20th century".

Traill studied in London under Anglo-Welsh painter and printmaker Frank Brangwyn, as well as taking classes in summer with him, in Belgium and the Netherlands. She was the most accomplished student from Australia that he taught.

Jessie Constance Alicia Traill (1881 - 1967) watercolor on paper, signed lower right & dated 1959, measures 3.5 x 6.5 and 8 x 11 inches with custom frame. Jessie Traill was one of Australia's most outstanding etchers, working in a field uncommon for women of her time. This biography explores her remarkable life - as artist, traveler, humanitarian and independent spirit. From the ten-year-old who first met Tom Roberts painting on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, to a student of Frederick McCubbin and etchers John Mather and Frank Brangwyn, Jessie developed her professional skills. She interrupted her career to work as a voluntary nurse in France during World War I, later raising funds for and revisiting war-torn Europe. Through diary extracts, descriptions of her world travels and personal letters we hear her voice and see through her eyes, beauty, humor and the joys of simple living.

She documented through regular poems and essays her visits to cathedrals, churches, and fortresses, referencing the architecture and richly carved details. "Every village has one with some little jewel to show…Corinthian pillars and beautifully carved figures - a church set on a hill rising by steps above the surrounding houses, light and joyful, decorated in every corner, 15th & 16th century windows of brightness and colour to complete the whole." Est: $5,000 - $8,000

ATTRIBUTED TO JESSIE TRAILL (1881-1967) Sister Kathleen at Harkaway Among the Purple Watsonias oil on board title inscribed verso 20 x 26.5cm PROVENANCE: Leonard Joel, Melbourne, 24 May 1978, lot 134 Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Unlike her composed images of landscape and industry, there is a sense of whimsical warmth and familiarity in this painting, guiding you through Jessie Traill's intimate life. Jessie surrounded herself with like-minded creatives and often with similarly independent and adventurous women, including fellow artists, Violet Teague and Anne Montgomery. Her most cherished relationships were with her three sisters, Kathleen, Elsie and Minna. Whilst none of the sisters married, they held an unshakeable bond, intertwined by religious faith and compassion for each other. During the early 1900s Kathleen and Minna joined the Community of the Holy Name, spending their time in Cheltenham. Keeping a close bond, Jessie and Elsie shared cottages in Sandringham and Harkaway throughout their lives. Hannah Ryan Art Specialist
