VG.  Signed in plate.   Little is known about Townsend, who was active during the late 19th century etching revival in Britain and France.  The print first appeared in P G Hamerton's "Portfolio" vol XI, 1880; the most influential art journal of it's time.  Another example of this etching is in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. VG
