    Jun. 02, 2021

    Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff: Cheval de Selle

    Est: €2,000 - €3,000

TOURGUENEFF, PIERRE-NICOLAS Paris 1853 - 1912 Title: Cheval de Selle. Technique: Bronze. Height: 31cm. Notation: Inscribed on the plinth: P. Tourgueneff. Foundry Mark: Underneath inscribed: N. 15 Cheval de Selle. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Pierre Nicolas Tourgueneff, who was born and died in Paris, studied under the famous French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. Like his teacher, Tourgueneff specialised in the sculptural representation of animals. Inspired by his time in the French military, his oeuvre is characterised above all by equine and equestrian figures, and this bronze sculpture is without exception one of them. Although the powerful parts of the animal have been particularly crafted, the result is an extremely elegant overall appearance, which is underlined by the matte patina of the sculpture. Tourgueneff was deeply rooted in the Parisian cultural scene and regularly took part in the Paris Salons, which served as the flagship of the French art establishment in the 19th century. In 1889, he received the Grand Prix during the Exposition Universelle and in 1903 he was awarded France's highest honour, the Legion d'honneur, for his life's work.

  • A bronze figure of a hussar on horseback
    Apr. 24, 2021

A bronze figure of a hussar on horseback

    Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Finely chased bronze model with slightly shimmering brown patina on a white veined black marble plinth signed “P. Tourgueneff”. Born in Russia, Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff (1853 - 1912) had to emigrate to France with his family and his politically persecuted father. He was taught by Emmanuel Frémiet (1824 - 1910), one of the most famous French sculptors of the reign of Napoléon III, and took part in the Salon exhibitions from 1880 onwards. The design for this important equestrian sculpture can probably be dated to the late 1880s or 1890s.
