Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1864 - d. 1901

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's drawings of 1880s Parisian nightlife led to his innovative posters of cabaret singers, entertainers, and now famous advertisements for the Moulin Rouge. Their popularity furthered his success as an artist. Born to an aristocratic family, he suffered childhood accidents that broke both his thigh bones. Neither grew back correctly. As an adult, his legs remained short while his torso was normal. Long periods of recuperation spent drawing led him to become an artist after his move to Paris and completion of his studies.

Once he discovered the Montmartre cabarets, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec produced drawings that captured the characters who frequented them. He was fascinated by the local prostitutes, spending weeks in brothels, candidly documenting their lives. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's paintings and artwork influenced the art world for decades after his death at 36 from alcoholism and syphilis. Condition B: replaced losses and overpainting in margins and corners, some into image; repaired tears at edges and in image. Lautrec's series Elles is one of the high-points of nineteenth-century art" (Adriani p. 222). The series depicts the prostitutes of Montmartre in a humble, intimate manner that did not flaunt their sexuality, but instead focused on the banal routines of their daily lives. 100 of these portfolios were printed. The cover and frontispiece of the folio bore this illustration, and when the 10 sheets were put on exhibition in the offices of La Plume magazine in 1896, this image, with the addition of the text (not by Lautrec's design), was re-used as a poster. Adriani 171-IV, Delteil 179, Adhemar 200, DFP-II 842, Wember 767, Devynck p. 89, Gold 85 (var), Salon des Cent p. 83.

  • HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901). MAY MILTON. 1895. 31x22¾ inches, 78¾x57¾ cm. [Edw. Ancourt, Paris.]
    Feb. 20, 2025

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901). MAY MILTON. 1895. 31x22¾ inches, 78¾x57¾ cm. [Edw. Ancourt, Paris.]

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) MAY MILTON. 1895. 31x22¾ inches, 78¾x57¾ cm. [Edw. Ancourt, Paris.] Condition B+: expert overpainting in image; repaired tears, small replaced losses and restoration at edges; unobtrusive horizontal fold; poster trimmed at edges. Matted and framed. A fixture in Montmartre's demimonde, Lautrec loved to attend shows at music halls, and did so tirelessly. With his active imagination and whimsical fantasy, he would often fall in love with improbable performers or acts. His attraction to May Belfort, who sang kitschy love songs while holding a cat, resulted in a poster for her. It also produced this poster for her lover, May Milton, an English dancer. It is one of the best examples of Lautrec's brilliant use of blank paper to help create an image. Against the white background, he evokes the perspective of the stage with a few lines and conveys the dancer's figure in a similar manner. The only real detail is in her face. Against a solid blue background, the composition is a tribute to Ukiyo-e Japanese prints as interpreted by Lautrec's genius. This is the second state, from an edition of 100. Adriani 134-II, Delteil 336, Reims 786, DFP-II 836, Wember 764, Wittrock P17B, Wine Spectator 45, Weill 50, Art Nouveau p. 96, Abdy p. 83.

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901). MAY BELFORT. 1895. 30½x23¾ inches, 77½x60¼ cm. Kleinmann, Paris.

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) MAY BELFORT. 1895. 30½x23¾ inches, 77½x60¼ cm. Kleinmann, Paris. Condition B+ / B: replaced losses and overpainting in margins; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image. Framed. May Belfort was an Irish performer who amused Lautrec with a singing act that went, "I've got a little cat, I'm very fond of that." The artist, who was known to suddenly go crazy for someone who amused or distracted him, was so delighted by this ridiculous act that he designed a poster for her. It is a sensitive piece that shows far more artistry than one would normally expect to see in a commercial assignment. He uses an oblique line to create the illusion of a stage, a flat red for her gown that catches the eye, and delicate paintbrush, crachis and pen work to help create a sensitive portrait. It is a delicate image that shows Lautrec at his best. Delteil 354 II, Adriani 126 IV, Wittrock P 14 B.

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) [ARISTIDE BRUANT DANS SON CABARET]. 1893. 54½x39 inches, 138½x99 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris. Condition A-: slight time-staining at edges; minor creases at edges and in image; unobtrusive pin holes in corners. Mounted on Chartex. Bruant was one of Lautrec's earliest supporters. One year after Lautrec designed his first poster for the Moulin Rouge, Bruant recognized the potential that such potent artwork could have for his own career. He "appreciated the sensation it had caused and recognized it as a watershed in marketing a personality and the experience of Montmartre" (Montmartre p. 92). The success of their first work (which Bruant had to force on the manager of the Ambassadeurs as he considered it too vulgar) led to many more commissions. This is Lautrec's third poster for the performer. It is "his sparest design for Bruant, with the performer turning his back to the viewer and glancing over his left shoulder, to reveal his face in profile. Now reduced to a few elemental shapes, this forceful hieroglyph served as Bruant's logo in a variety of formats" (ibid p. 93). The broad strokes, flat colors, detailed representation of the singer's face, and the implied arrogance of the performer who would turn his back on his public all served to make this an iconic image. The poster originally appeared without text; when the second edition with text was printed ("Aristide Bruant dans son Cabaret,") it was done so by a different printer, Edward Ancourt. Rare Original Toulouse Lautrec Print Le Jockey 1899

    Est: $60,000 - $70,000

This rare lithograph was created by Henri de Toulouse Laurec in 1899, at the height of his career. Originally intended as one part in a series of equestrian scenes for sale to collectors, this is the only image to have been actually sent to print. The expressionistic and energetically drawn style captures both the spirit of an exciting horse race, as well as the style more frequently used by the artist is his paintings rather than his prints. Much more detail is seen in this print than that of Lautrec's posters, which embraced more of the flattened planes of Japanese woodcuts. Large and simplified shapes of bold color are replaced here with intricate cross-hatching and shaded dimension. This print was created in a period of the artists' life in which he was hospitalized for his physical and mental health in the French countryside, after which he promptly returned to Paris to continue his well-documented life of debauchery. This is the from the second state of two printings, in an edition of approximately 112. Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901), had a short life in which he created an extensive amount of groundbreaking art in the form of paintings, drawings, and prints. Born into an aristocratic family, Lautrec had a series of birth defects as a result of genetic inbreeding. Stunted in height (he was under 5 feet tall) and emotionally damaged from a sterile childhood, Lautrec lived a life in the shadows. His bohemian lifestyle in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris inspired Lautrec to highlight the darker underbelly of Parisian society. This alternative lifestyle manifested itself directly in Lautrec's art - broad flat planes of color were drawn from his time in opium dens filled with Asian woodblock prints, strong shadows came from his nightly visits to the Moulin Rouge (where he had a reserved seat) with its warm gas lighting, and his fervent use of line stemmed from the joie de vivre that flowed out of the cabaret and can-can moves of the Parisian stage performers. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is mounted, backed onto Japan, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity all our posters.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), lithograph Au Pied de l'Echafaud, 1893, framed Stone monogrammed lithograph printed in five colours by Chaix, Paris, on wove paper, and commissioned by 'Le Matin', Paris. This poster advertised the serialization in the magazine 'Le Matin' of the memoirs of Abbé Faure, entitled 'at the foot of the gallows' (au pied de l'échafaud). He was a chaplain at the prison La Roquette and witnessed thirty-eight executions. One of Lautrec's rare nods to social realism, the poster's stark composition and blood red-and-black colour scheme underscore its grisly subject. The abbot's narrative is actually quite banal and repetitive, but Lautrec manages to transform it into riveting drama. With an eye for the sensational, he places the viewpoint in the lower left corner, exactly at the guillotine's lever, capturing the scene through the blade, neck notch and opened basket. Provenance: Phillips' old master, modern & contemporary prints, June 1990, lot 494.

    Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), 'Jane Avril' (1893), lithograph in colours on wove paper 127 x 92.5 cm. (50 x 36.4 in.)

    Est: €12,000 - €18,000

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), 'Jane Avril' (1893), lithograph in colours on wove paper The quintessential Moulin Rouge star Jane Avril was immortalised by Toulouse-Lautrec and various other artists of the Avant-Garde movement during her turbulent life. The Belgian author Frantz Jourdain described her as "this exquisite creature, nervous and neurotic, the captivating flower of artistic corruption and of sickly grace". Struggling to survive in fin de siècle Paris, she worked as a secretary to Arsène Houssaye, as a rider or acrobat at the Hippodrome de l'Alma, and as a cashier at the Exposition Universelle, while at night she pursued a career in dancing by performing at local dance halls and cafés-concerts. Using the stage name Jane Avril, suggested by an English lover, she built a reputation that eventually allowed her to make a living as a full-time dancer. During this time, she became known by various nicknames: La Mélinite after an explosive, L'Etrange ("The Strange One"), and Jane la Folle ("Jane the Crazy"). Hired by the Moulin Rouge nightclub in 1889, within a few years, she headlined at the Jardin de Paris, one of the major cafés-concerts on the Champs-Élysées. To advertise the extravaganza, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted her portrait on a poster that elevated her stature in the entertainment world even further. The popularity of the can-can became such that Avril travelled with a dance troupe to perform in London in 1896. Printed by Chaix, Paris, distributed by Kleinmann.
