  • FRANCESC TORRESCASSANA SALLARÉS (Barcelona, 1845 - 1918). "Boats and fishermen on the beach", 1868. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. The frame has some lack of polychrome.

FRANCESC TORRESCASSANA SALLARÉS (Barcelona, 1845 - 1918). "Boats and fishermen on the beach", 1868. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. The frame has some lack of polychrome.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,200

FRANCESC TORRESCASSANA SALLARÉS (Barcelona, 1845 - 1918). "Boats and fishermen on the beach", 1868. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. The frame has some lack of polychrome. Measurements: 85 x 166 cm; 120 x 190 cm (frame). In this canvas Torrescasana captures a costumbrista scene, apparently placid by the silent atmosphere, but nevertheless loaded with a contained tension. Surrounded by a luminous landscape, with delicate chromatism and captured with a tremendously expressive lyrical tone, the fishermen and their wives fish on the shore. Formally, the personal expression of the landscape stands out, with a naturalistic character, worked with a loose, agile and very impastoed brushstroke, which leaves the drawing in the background. The voluminous and pompous clouds stand out superbly in the landscape. Francesc Torrescassana studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Ramón Martí Alsina. In 1864 he was awarded an honorable mention at the National Exhibition in Madrid. He was granted a scholarship in Rome and later traveled to Paris, where he came into contact with the main pictorial currents of the time. On his return to Barcelona, he dedicated himself to the production of history paintings and paintings of customs. In 1869 he attended the inauguration of the Suez Canal, where he made several reportage paintings. At first his painting reflects a profound influence of his master, within a bourgeois realism. However, little by little he distanced himself from Martí Alsina's style, working with a softer and sweeter palette. In the last twenty years of his life he dedicated himself to landscapes, with a great quality of light and transparency, built on textures, where parallels with impressionism can be perceived. During these years he also worked on portraits, a genre in which the portrait of Miquel Vilaregut (1911) stands out. It was during this period that his personality and creative vivacity were reaffirmed. In 1934 a monographic exhibition of his work was dedicated to him at the Syra Galleries in Barcelona. His works are kept in the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Museum of the Abbey of Montserrat and the Louvre in Paris, as well as in the Casa Vicens of Antonio Gaudí, in Barcelona.

    SELF-PORTRAIT, FRANCISCO TORRESCASSANA (BARCELOMA, 1845 - 1918)

    Est: €1,200 - €1,800

Oil on canvas. Francisco Torrescassana or Francesc Torrescassana i Sallarés (Barcelona, 1845 - 1918) was a disciple of Ramón Martí Alsina. Trained at the Lonja School in Barcelona from 1859 to 1865, completing his higher studies in painting there, he traveled to Paris in 1867, where he presented two of his works at the Universal Exhibition. In 1869 he traveled to Egypt to attend the inauguration of the Suez Canal and portray the passage through it of the first Spanish ship that crossed it. In 1864 he presented two marinas and a View of Gelida at the national exhibition in Madrid, for which he received honorable mention in several Barcelona newspapers for four of his sketches, "representing different scenes of the embarkation of the Catalan volunteers destined for Cuba." It also appears in the exhibitions of the Sala Parés and in the general exhibitions of Fine Arts organized in Barcelona in 1891. Already in 1894, which was attended by a large history painting, Sister Sauxa and her charity companions. His gloomy affair, the collection of the corpses of those executed by hanging in the vicinity of Barcelona, seemed to the same critic that he was not capable of moving, having been treated with a lack of "naturalness in the composition of the whole, which is far-fetched." blaming him for an excess of study, for which he deserved the praise, but little soul. In 1910 he presented in the anthological Exhibition of Portraits and Ancient and Modern Drawings held at the Palau de Belles Arts in Barcelona his Self-Portrait, in which he showed himself with his gaze directed at the viewer, before the easel and with a brush in hand. Various landscapes of Torrescassana are preserved, among others, in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the Library Museum Víctor Balaguer, or the Museu d'Art de Gerona, and the Banco Sabadell collection, with a painting dedicated to the vintage in which the traditional realism that characterized much of his painting, closely linked to the teachings received from Martí Alsinaa, opens up to new studies of light. As for portraits, also abundant in his artistic production, the The University of Barcelona keeps in the rectory gallery the portrait of Pablo González Huebra, appointed rector in 1886, but it is probably in the dining room of Antoni Gaudí's Casa Vicens where the most important list of Torrescassana's works is kept.
