Juanito Torres (b.1978) - The Assassination of Governor-General Bustamante

      Est: ₱380,000 - ₱494,000

The Assassination of Governor-General Bustamante signed and dated 2010 (lower right) oil on canvas 80" x 117" (203 cm x 297 cm) Juanito Torres is celebrated for his masterful portrayal of vivid scenes from the most compelling episodes of Philippine history. However, his artistic repertoire extends beyond mere historical portrayal; he offers a vibrant and satirical interpretation of Philippine societal dynamics. Torres's work is more than just a reflection of history; it is a commentary on the complex interplay of social forces that have shaped Philippine society. With each brushstroke, he invites viewers to delve deeper into the intricacies of Philippine history and culture, offering a fresh perspective on the past while shedding light on the present. In this piece, Torres does not only look at a significant moment in our history, but a historical work of art as well. El Asesinato del Gobernador Fernando Bustamante y su Hijo or The Assasination of Governor Fernando Bustamante and Son is undoubtedly among the most iconic works of art in Filipino history. Its story is not only one about an event that shaped our nation, but its creator Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, was among the very first Filipinos to truly showcase local talent on the international stage. Here, Torres echoes the social and political underpinnings that birthed the original 19th century work. In his usual style, the artist infuses his piece with contemporary motifs and humor, weaving together a much more diverse cast as a way to reflect not only the complexity of our situation, but also the nuances that have come out of our understanding of the human condition and society at large. Heroes and Freedom (Patria Adorada) signed and dated 2023 (lower right) oil on canvas 69 1/2” x 56 1/2” (177 cm x 144 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPJuanito Torres is a distinguished artist renowned for masterfully resurrecting vivid scenes straight from the most compelling episodes of Philippine history. His repertoire extends beyond mere historical portrayal; he showcases a vibrant, satirical interpretation of Philippine societal dynamics. Through his skillful use of visual storytelling, Torres weaves a never-ending tapestry populated by meticulously researched characters, capturing the essence of Philippine life with a keen eye for detail. His expansive canvases boast a bold display of bravado, delicate charm, and clever wit, skillfully crafting scenes that resonate with an audience. Revolutionary figures that frequently appear in his works, coupled with Torres' adept use of muted browns, serve to highlight the harmonious blending of opposing elements, encapsulating the complex and multifaceted nature of the Filipino identity. Here, Torres references one of Jose Rizal’s last works: Farewell. "Adiós" (Farewell) is a poignant and moving poem written by the Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal. It was penned on the eve of his execution in 1896. The poem reflects Rizal's farewell to his fellow Filipinos, his family, and his beloved country, as he faced the inevitability of his own demise. The poem speaks of leaving all that is dear and significant behind—the people, the land, the sweet joys, and the cherished affections. Rizal expresses a profound sense of longing and the pain of parting. It reflects his deep patriotism and his longing for a brighter future for his beloved country. (Jed Daya) Torres was inspired to create this artwork from his previous readings about Philippine freedom and our national heroes. The theme of this painting does not focus only on Filipino liberty but on the encompassing concept of national independence. The artist used Juan Luna’s painting portraying a Filipina guided by an elder (Spain) who strives for her own liberty. However, no country can be called totally free while under any foreign government. Both the reformists and revolutionaries were asking for a stronger voice in being able to assert one’s own destiny. This is what the revolucionarios such as Andres Bonifacio, Antonio Luna and Emilio Jacinto wanted us Filipinos to achieve which was for the Philippines to be totally independent as a country. Torres posits, however, that the matter of what Dr. Jose Rizal and other reformists fought for, cannot be put aside because it was an important part of the process of how our country finally became free. Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Juanito Torres (b.1978) La Solidaridad signed and dated 2013 (lower right) oil on canvas 68" x 92" (173 cm x 234 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Galerie Joaquin and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The works of acclaimed Filipino artist Juanito Torres are rarely without spectacle. His stylized tableaus, which blend together images of history, pop culture, and other objects of mythos, often take on an ironic and satirical tone. The inherent humor of his works stem from the jarring effect that comes from his use of characters or personas that, more often than not, hail from different places, eras, or even worlds. But Torres' humor is anything but blunt. Instead, its banter cuts deep, revealing a critical eye that directs the viewer to the nuances of the situation. In Juanito Torres' work, the characters come to life: Marcelo H. del Pilar, known as "Plaridel," stands on the left; Mariano Ponce, also known as "Tikbalang," occupies a space; Jose Maria Panganiban, referred to as "Jomapa," finds his presence; Graciano Lopez Jaena captures a spot; Felix Ressurreccion Hidalgo's essence is painted; Dr. Jose Rizal, known as "Laong Laan," is depicted; Juan Luna's figure is present; and Antonio Luna, "Taga ilog," holds a place. Torres intentionally elevates Marcelo H. del Pilar and Dr. Jose P. Rizal, positioning them prominently in the foreground, given their pivotal roles in The Propaganda Movement. The artwork underscores the significance of the newspaper ‘La Solidaridad.’ Marcelo H. del Pilar, succeeding Graciano Lopez Jaena, assumed the role of La Solidaridad's editor. Recognized as the father of Philippine journalism, he lends his name to the College of Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines, also known as Plaridel Hall. (Jed Daya)

Juanito Torres (b. 1978) Pinagpala II signed and dated 2006 (lower right) oil on canvas 72" x 48" (183 cm x 122 cm) An alumnus of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and a finalist of the Metrobank Foundation Painting Competition in 2005, Juanito Torres has gained the attention of the art scene with his parallelisms of history and contemporary life as a way of generating new narrative trajectories. In Pinagpala II Torres seemingly explores the effects and influence of religion within the Filipino experience. The work features a girl fitted with the garments often attributed to the child Jesus or the Sto. Nino. The girl is also seen wearing a crown and carrying a globus cruciger, both of which signify the salvation and dominance of Christ and the Church. Despite her vestments, the does not exude the sense of grace often attributed to them. Instead she seemingly has a neutral and even slightly miserable look on her face, a disposition that is supplemented by the strict and stern look found on the elderly woman behind her. While next to the woman is an older girl whose position is oriented away from the other two. The work can thus be considered a critique of organized religion’s often overbearing influence on the nuances of human life and the dynamics of the family unit.

A part of this painting also shows a dragged figure drawn from Juan Luna’s Spoliarium. Torres, deeply informed by familiar faces and facets in Philippine history, is concerned as to how shared “histories” are constructed, depicting elements with a surrealist bent. By taking a deeper look in the past, he is able to reveal truths about contemporary Philippine society. It is not surprising that his works are present in historical museums such as the Mabini Museum in Batangas and the Juan and Antonio Luna Museum in Ilocos Norte. His creative visual takes on history are also part of the main collection of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Torres is an alumnus of the Philippine High School of the Arts and the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines.

Juanito Torres’s paintings of historical conflict differ markedly from the traditional in mood, being more theatrical and less graphic, plus a generous dose of literally childish expressions, no matter how serious. Here, not one nor two but everybody in the picture might as well be portraying the bolo-wielding Andres Bonifacio, all with their arms raised. Torres has gained attention with what has been seen as very Pinoy comedic cum historic subjects with an ever-present askal (an abbreviation of asong kalye or Philippine street dog, now called aspin or asong Pinoy) observing the bawdy scenes. The dog is always a most engaging character, and an askal is incorporated into an otherwise historical cum humorous tableau of things with a Filipino temperament. Although always interested in the pompous stories told in a grand manner by historic paintings, he responded to the ever-present challenge of combining traditional high art with a tangible identification with the masses, especially the younger generation. Thus it became a staple in his art to incorporate children as the dynamic subjects of his paintings picked from the pages of local history. Torres used children as players in the role of soldiers and the audience wouldn’t be surprised if actual children had to pose for the occasion.

An alumnus of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and a finalist of the Metrobank Foundation Painting Competition in 2005, Juanito Torres has gained the attention of the art scene with his parallelisms of history and contemporary life as a way of generating new narrative trajectories. In this work, Jose Rizal is decontextualized from his usual milieu by virtue of the theatrical elements present that effectively ground his image within parody and lampoon. The two other images accompanying him—the Spanish dignitary and the idealized Filipina farm girl—evoke the intentionally jarring effect that symbolizes the contrasting contexts that are at the heart of the Filipino identity and experience.

In this work, Jose Rizal, together with a woman wearing a Filipiniana (possibly Josephine Bracken), is decontextualized from his historical moment. Now situated against the curved railing of an opulent interior, Rizal looks out of place and interrogative of the viewer. Defamiliarized this way, Rizal, as mediated by Torres, prompts questions on the role of heroes and their continued relevance to contemporary times.
