      Est: €3,000 - €3,500

PEDRO TORRE-ISUNZA (Don Benito, Badajoz, 1892-Madrid, 1982). "Bust of a gypsy woman playing cards", 1928. Bronze. Signed on the lower part. Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Work reproduced in the catalogue of this exhibition, published by the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes, 2014. Dimensions: 46 x 49 x 20 cm. with stand. Weight: 6.5 kg. Pedro Torre-Isunza's work revolved around the female universe, showing in his portraits a special intuition for capturing psychology. This can be seen in the portrait of this card-pulling gypsy, for which Agustina, a woman from Granada who was popular among the artists of the time, was used as a model. Pedro Torre-Isunza began his training in Madrid at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, but soon joined the workshop of the sculptor Mateo Inurria, who profoundly influenced his style. According to the biography compiled by the Prado Museum, which houses a work by the sculptor: "he spent a year in Rome and also travelled to Paris, where he worked with Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, a Sevillian sculptor with a realist style. Back in Spain, from 1916 onwards he directed the workshop of casts at the Museo de Reproducciones in Madrid. He took part in the Autumn Salons and in numerous editions of the National Exhibitions, winning a second medal in 1922 for Salomé and in 1930 for La Piedad (Prado). He also won first medal at the National Exhibition in Barcelona in 1942. His style, of a balanced and serene character, sometimes shows a more accentuated realistic vein, but in most of his production we can find concomitances with the classicist style of José Clará. His work, characterised by soft, stylised female nudes, shows his taste for sensuality and a certain idealisation that is qualified in the portraits, in which he conveys a great capacity for capturing the character of the sitter".
