    • FRANCIS TOROND (BRITISH, 1743-1812) , SILHOUETTE CONVERSATION GROUP
      May. 16, 2024

FRANCIS TOROND (BRITISH, 1743-1812) , SILHOUETTE CONVERSATION GROUP

      Est: £800 - £1,200

FRANCIS TOROND (BRITISH, 1743-1812) , SILHOUETTE CONVERSATION GROUP LATE 18TH CENTURY ink on paper, depicting a fashionable couple seated at a table by a window, she has her hair in a banging chignon with lace ribbons, and a posy on her chest, and reads from a book; he wears a frock coat with his hair tied in a queue, and writes with a quill, with an oval label below ‘Torond/ No. 18/ Wells Street’, in a gilt matted oval mount and ebonised and gilt moulded frame 33cm x 44cm. excluding frame Note: A later handwritten note on the reverse identifies the sitters as George Mackay, 5th Baronet of Reay, and his wife, however this attribution is spurious as the 5th Lord of Reay died in 1768, a decade before Francis Torond was actively working as a silhouette artist. The 6th Lord of Reay was unmarried, so it is uncertain who the sitters may be.
