Tabletop table; Italy, 17th century. Polychrome plaster. Central image by GIACOMO TORELLI (Italy,1608 - 1678)

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Table top; Italy, 17th century. Polychrome plaster. Central image by GIACOMO TORELLI (Italy,1608 - 1678) Measures: 48 x 68 cm; 53 x 73 cm (frame). Table top made of plaster whose design is inspired by Italian models from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The decoration is arranged around the entire tabletop, framed by vegetal ornaments, rising towards the centre in a thin band which frames the central scene. This scene was designed by the Italian set designer, landscape painter, engineer and architect Giacomo Torelli. It is the set for the play Andromeda by Pierre Corneille. The Troupe Royale of the Hôtel de Bourgogne was to perform it, but its usual stage was not suitable for the scene-changing machinery and special effects. Torelli's set design work, in particular his designs of machinery to create spectacular scene changes and other special effects, was widely reproduced and thus survives as the most complete record of mid-17th-century set design.
