Der französische „Allround-Künstler" Roland Topor wurde als Kind polnisch-jüdischer Eltern in Paris geboren und überlebte die deutsche Besatzung versteckt auf dem Land. Mitte der 50er Jahre studierte er an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Seine Zeichnungen und eine erste Novelle veröffentlichte er ab 1958 in Zeitschriften und Magazinen. Er war nicht nur Maler und Zeichner, Dichter und Autor, sondern auch Bühnenbildner, Dramatiker, Regisseur, Schauspieler, Liedermacher, Trickfilmer und Plakatgrafiker - die Liste könnte wahrscheinlich ergänzt werden. Sein Roman "Der Mieter" wurde 1976 von Roman Polański verfilmt. Topor starb 1997 an einer Gehirnblutung nach einem Sturz. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt eine Figur angelehnt an die satirischen Komödie „Marquis" von Roland Topor und Henri Xhonneux. Der Film erschien 1989, die meisten Arbeiten in Vorbereitung des Films stammen aus den Jahren 1988 und 1989, doch beschäftigte sich Topor eindeutig schon fünf Jahre zuvor mit der Thematik. Der Film spielt zur Zeit der Französischen Revolution und ist angelehnt an Leben und Werk des Marquis de Sade. Im Film ist Libertin Marquis de Sade aufgrund der Entweihung eines Kruzifixes in der Bastille inhaftiert. Dort schreibt er pornographische Texte und diskutiert diese mit seinem übergroßen Geschlecht namens Colin. Kritik an Kirche und Gesellschaft ist im Film ebenso gegenwärtig wie bizarre Sexualität.
