Sallie Toohey for Rookwood Pottery, Rare and Early Dull Finish Glaze miniature jug with cherry blossoms

        Est: $200 - $300

Sallie Toohey for Rookwood Pottery Rare and Early Dull Finish Glaze miniature jug with cherry blossoms USA, c. 1891 glazed earthenware 1 h x .75 w x .625 d in (3 x 2 x 2 cm) The present work is the smallest artist signed and decorated piece of Rookwood known. Painted artist's monogram and glaze designation to underside. Provenance: Loretta Holtkamp, Cincinnati (Rookwood artist) | Thence by descent Catalog Note: The present lot was probably an after-hours project, indicated by the presence of hand-incised marks rather than the typical impressed company logo, shape number and date code. Curiously, this piece exhibits mold lines, indicating there may be other extant examples. Perhaps it was the result of a contest to see who could decorate such a diminutive piece, but this is the only one we have seen and, until and unless other examples surface, it is the smallest known artist signed and decorated piece of Rookwood. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
