      • Tan Tong (b. Selangor, 1942 - 2013) Winter Symphony, 2003
        Nov. 06, 2022

        Tan Tong (b. Selangor, 1942 - 2013) Winter Symphony, 2003

        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

Tan Tong's works comprise an infusion of Chinese philosophy, culture and history with I-Ching hexagrams and nine-square grid of Chinese magic squares (also known as the Golden Section), with elements of Taoist mysticism and Tantric Buddhist space (cosmology). In Winter Symphony, two pairs of ballet dancers move with grace, and the scene is imbued with a sense of dynamic balance and energy. One of France's most stunning landscapes, Mont-Saint-Michel, is depicted at the top of the composition. The work shows fusion and influence from the East and the West. Tan Tong, artist-printmaker-art thinker, is one of Malaysia's most flamboyant French-trained artists with a struggle to boot. He was doubly given major exhibitions by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), his Retrospective called Homage To Tan Tong: His Life And Times (2011-2012) and Tan Tong: Homage to Picasso (2006). Tan Tong was given a French Government scholarship to study at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts (ENSBA) in Paris (1964-1969), and he followed up with a double diploma in Painting and Drawing in 1974-1975, which is marked by his winning the Fondation Rocheron Award at ENSBA. He also studied French literature at the University of Bordeaux. In 1991, Tan Tong won a Consolation Prize for Painting at the National Art Gallery's Salon Malaysia. He had 17 solos since his first at the Foyer des Artistes Galerie, Montparnasse Paris in 1967. His other overseas solos were in Singapore, at the Meyer Gallery in 1970 and the Notices Gallery in 1993. His first local solo was at the Samat Art Gallery in 1970. He taught at the Malaysian Institute of Art for 26 years, retiring as Head of the Department of Art and Design in 2002.

Tan Tong's works comprise an infusion of Chinese philosophy, culture and history with I-Ching hexagrams and nine-square grid of Chinese magic squares (also known as the Golden Section), with elements of Taoist mysticism and Tantric Buddhist space (cosmology). Summer Symphony is magnificently expressed in a dynamic interplay of vertical shapes. It contains all the elements much beloved by the artist: the iconic Eiffel Tower, dancing lovers, and little birds. Sun and moon symbols are depicted on the top of the composition. The work shows fusion and influence from the East and the West. Tan Tong, artist-printmaker-art thinker, is one of Malaysia's most flamboyant French-trained artists with a struggle to boot. Tan Tong (b. Selangor, 1942 - d. 2013) MT. W - 2, 2004

        Est: RM20,000 - RM40,000

The portraits of the voluptuous Marie-Therese Walter brought strong feminine and sensual elements to Picasso’s Cubism straightjacket, and especially so after his domineering first wife, a former Russian ballerina, Olga. Picasso’s tempestuous affair with the blonde Walter, then a 17-year-old Lolita, mainly at Picasso’s Chateau Bousgeloup in Normandy, saw a flowering of works in paintings, prints (Vollard Suite) and sculptures, with Walter shown with misshapen bulbous nose. Tan Tong had made an obverse image, differently coloured denoting Night and Day, and infusing them with Yin-Yang Tao symbolism and his ‘Thousand-Eye (Buddha Eye)’ repertoire. Walter, like the sex vixen of Chinese antiquity, Yang Kwei-fei, are two of Tan Tong’s favourites as the femme fatale, and this homage with the ribboned hat and striped bodice is based on the portrait in Picasso Museum in Paris, which Tan Tong visited again in 2002 (he was to visit Paris three more times), which saw effusive colours in all its Pop gaiety. Tan Tong, artist-printmaker-art thinker, is one of Malaysia’s most flamboyant French-trained artists with a struggle to boot. He was doubly given major exhibitions by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), his Retrospective called Homage To Tan Tong: His Life And Times (2011-2012) and Tan Tong: Homage to Picasso (2006). Est: RM22,000 - RM40,000

Tan Tong’s documentation of the China-France Culture Year in 2004, illustrates symbolic pictograms. The artwork is composed in a grid like composition of 9 squares. It contains two illustrations of women in graceful poses, and a drawing of the Eiffel tower, celebrating exchange between the Oriental and Western civilisations. Tan Tong was given a retrospective by the Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) called Homage To Tan Tong: His Life And Times, at its Kuala Lumpur headquarter from Dec 17, 2011 to Jan 1, 2012. This follows another major exhibition, Homage To Picasso, also hosted by SGM, in 2006. Tan Tong was given a French Government scholarship to study at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts (ENSBA), Paris, in 1964-1969, and he graduated with a double diploma (Painting and Drawing) in 1974 and 1975. Est: RM25,000 - RM45,000

Tan Tong’s works comprise an infusion of Chinese philosophy, culture and history with I-Ching hexagrams and nine-square grid of Chinese magic squares (also known as the Golden Section), with elements of Taoist mysticism and Tantric Buddhist space (cosmology). The work shows fusion / influence from the East and the West. Tan Tong held two major exhibitions during his lifetime: Homage To Picasso in August 2006 and Homage To Tan Tong - His Art And Times at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia (December 2011 to January 2012). In both shows, he developed his “Neo-Cubism” and “DeCubism” style of painting. Tan Tong received diplomas in painting and drawing from the Ecole Nationale Superieur des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he attended from 1972 to 1975. His re-enrolment was due to non-recognition from his first attendance at the same institution from 1964 to 1969, apparently because of being foreign. However, he was granted a rare solo show at the Foyer des Artistes Galerie in 1967. In 1974, he won the La Fondation Rocheron Award for his Buddha Eye painting. He received another French Government scholarship to study French language at the Bordeaux University between October 1970 to June 1971. Tan Tong (b. 1942 - d. 2013) SYMPHONIE HM PP MAJOR 1, 2003

        Est: RM23,000 - RM40,000

Here Tan Tong combines his earlier Chinese ideograms in mock crypto scripts with simplified human origami of his Yin-Yang Symphony of Paris balletic forms but like in calisthenics instead. The same format of composition is used in another work of such surreal classical bent, Symphonie HMPP Major II, but done in 2004. The Chinese hairline texts are flanked at the sides on top against yellow panels, with a scroll text on white running down the centre with a blue ‘pictorial’on top of a female form in an enticing pose. Some of the texts are shown in miniscule odd shapes, looking like a Calder mobile. It says much of Soka Gakkai Malaysia’s prescience and foresight to accord Tan Tong two major exhibitions showcasing his serious artistic creativity. They were Homage to Picasso (August 2006) and Homage to Tan Tong – His Art and Times (December 2011 - January 2012). In these, he invented his Neo-Cubism and De-Cubism. Tan Tong received a double diplomas (Painting and Drawing) from the Ecole Nationale Superieur des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris in 1972-75 after re-enrolling there. His did not get any certificate from his first stint from 1964 to December 1969, because of a foreigner’s ruling. But he was given a rare solo in at the Foyer des Artistes Galerie in 1967. Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

Tan Tong's documentation of the 2012 London Olympics is headlighted by the Union Jack and the official logo of the Games, signifying the third time London is hosting the Games, the earlier ones being in 1908 and 1948. It was datelined by stenciled numerals and letterings. The Olympics was held between July 27 to Aug 12, 2012. Two epigrams, on diving and running on water and land respectively, are among the 26 different sports selected. Typically Tan Tong, a large profile of a naked woman back turned and a painting palette, stamped his mark on the painting, celebrating Olympics via Art. Tan Tong was given a retrospective by the Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) called Homage To Tan Tong: His Life And Times, at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters from Dec 17, 2011 to Jan 1, 2012.
