WILLIAM PICKNEY TOLER (American, 1826-1899) SAILING THE GALE. Large oil on canvas nautical scene shows two American ships passing in rough water under dark skies. Each fly the American flag and are seen with some sails up. Signed lower right "W.P. Toler". Housed in what appears to be its original period gesso decorated gilt frame and wide gilt liner. Also signed on reverse of stretcher "W.P. Toler". SIZE: 24" x 42". CONDITION: Very good. 9-72305 (4,000-6,000)
