Signed and dated 'Tobey 65' lower right in black. With a photo-certificate by Heiner Hachmeister, Münster, Committee Mark Tobey, dated 22 March 2018. The work will be included in the catalogue raisonné. In the mid-1960s Mark Tobey was experimenting with various techniques and materials that were new to him, particularly monotypes. In these works he combines organic forms into dense structures that expand his characteristic, calligraphy-like body of work through a new, shape-based pictorial idiom. With its delicate, shimmering streaks of colour and copper-toned contours, “Play of colors” possesses a light-hearted ease and stirs diverse thematic associations, such as microscopic views or the patterns of ornamental fabrics. The artist himself has described the constant change on which his work was based: “For my part, I believe the main problem of painting lies in rhythm and in the plasticity of the composition, often also in the sensibility with which the paint is applied, which could also be called a feel for texture and structure. Because I have no fixed ideas – that is to say, no philosophical affinity to any particular methods of thinking – my work is constantly in flux, or at least it seems that way to me. I do not take up any stable position myself. […] My pictures are of a kind that does not permit viewers to attach themselves to some detail, to find repose in it” (cited in: exh. cat. Mark Tobey.
