Darby Jampijinpa Ross circa 1905-2005 PAMAPARDU JUKURRPA (FLYING ANT DREAMING) (1991) synthetic polymer paint on linen 181.5 X 152CM PROVENANCE Painted at Yuendumu, Northern Territory Warlukurlangu Artists, Yuendumu Private Collection, France Private Collection, United Kingdom This painting is sold with an accompanying certificate from Warlukurlangu Artists that reads: 'Pamapardu is the Warlpiri name for the flying ants or termites that build the large termite mounds (mingkirri) found throughout Warlpiri country. After rains the ants emerge from their flooding nests to fly to a new home. They discard their wings when they enter the new (dry) mingkirri. The ant grubs are eaten by goannas and collected by women for human consumption. The short bars represent the pamapardu travelling between and circling mingkirris (roundels) before losing their wings and entering. The country associated with this Dreaming is Wantungurru west of Yuendumu, belonging to Jampijinpa/Jangala sub-section. The specific site of Wantungurru is represented as the largest concentric circle.' In his public art, Darby Ross rarely settled for a limited palette, but took full advantage of the colours available to him to create paintings that reverberate with the ancestral energies that infuse the country that was his subject, as in this high-keyed and adventurous work. A close colleague of the artist, and one-time art coordinator at Warlukurlangu Artists at Yuendumu, Susan Congreve, is quoted as saying 'people look at his paintings and they think they are done by a youngfella, because they look really modern. They say, it's not very traditional. But they don't know that he was one of the most inventive, most educated, that is the gift Darby had.'
