Johann Valentin Tischbein, Pair of Portraits of Landrat Jacobi aus Hildburghausen and his Wife

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Johann Valentin is the oldest member of the Tischbein family of painters, and the eldest brother of Johann Heinrich the Elder, the famous painter from Kassel. Johann Valentin was taught from 1729 onwards by the Darmstadt painter Johann Christian Fiedler. This apprenticeship was followed by stays in Kassel, Frankfurt and Hanau. He became court painter to the Count of Solms-Laubach in 1741, and in 1765 became court painter and cabinet secretary in the service of Duke Eugen of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Comparatively few of his works have survived, but some of those still existent are kept in Staatliche Museen in Kassel, the Angermuseum in Erfurt and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The style and manner of the sitters in these portraits allow for a doubtless attribution to Johann Valentin Tischbein. The fine, detailed depiction of the lace, velvet and jewellery is typical of this artist. The piece has been confirmed as a genuine work by Prof. Dr. Erich Herzog and Dr. Marianne Heinz (Staatliche Museen Kassel).

    • TISCHBEIN THE ELDER, PORTRAIT OF A MUSE

TISCHBEIN THE ELDER, PORTRAIT OF A MUSE

      Est: €20,000 - €24,000

In this painting from 1759, Johann Heinrich Tischbein depicts the muse in a somewhat unusual manner. It is probably Terpsichore, the muse of dance and song; her attributes being the lyre, seen lower right, and the flower wreath which is however missing. According to several writers of antiquity, Terpsichore's name derives from her entertaining of lovers by seduction through knowledge. She is believed to have invented dance and other fine arts before later inventing the sciences. Tischbein's use of other 'attributes', such as the laurel wreath and writing utensils, reflect his more complex interpretation. The composition also relates to allegorical portraits popular at the time, for example the laurel-crowned singer Faustina Bordoni by Rosalba Carriera. The painting reflects the influence of Venetian painters such as Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Rosalba auf Tischbein, who in 1749 and 1751 stayed in Venice for several months working in Piazzetta's studio. The female portrait with the attributes painted at the bottom is directly comparable to Piazzetta's so-called "Teste" (Heads). In 1759, the year this painting was created, Tischbein spent time in Eutin where he was working on the portrait of the Ducal family of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön. We thank Dr. Justus Lange, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Kassel, for providing the information. The beautiful, carved frame by W. Cribb.
