      Chester J Tingler (1886 - 1966) oil on artist's board painting of a clipper ship. Signed lower left. Sight size: 19.5 x 26.5 inches. Chester Tingler was a WPA artist, taught art in Coconut Grove, Florida, and produced works in watercolor and mixed media. He was known for landscapes, circus themed paintings, and those of everyday people at work. He won two honors in a 1932 art competition sponsored by the state of Florida. The competition was to find six muralists whose work would depict Florida and be exhibited at the 1933 Chicago Century of Progress, also known as the 1933 World’s Fair. Mr. Tingler won for the category of Colonization. His drawings won him a 1-year scholarship to the Albright Art Gallery. He studied at the Art Student’s League and later went to work on Broadway, producing scenic and costume designs for such luminaries as Florenz Ziegfeld and the Shubert brothers. In 1917, Tingler won the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney award for mural painting.
